Pajero vs Discovery

I know this is getting old but herself doesnt like the Disco or the Range Rover and I'm getting pissed with being rattled about by the Terrano. To be fair its the only problem I have with the machine, its noisy and it rattles like hell but it drives brilliantly for a 4x4, pulls well and does about 32mpg.

I'm in no rush to change which gives me time to look around but I want to have lots of info on what I'm looking at. I had a pajero Sport before and fuel economy aside i'd have no problem going back to mitsubishi (just not a sport). I like the Disco but realistically the only option is importing one.

only problem is that I need a low gear, which rules out alot of vehicles. My ideal choice would actually be a VW transporter T5. otherwise I would probably consider it

OH BTW thanks everybody for voting!!!!

hi i have a 3.2 lwb pajero out on loan atm its a 06 and i have to say very economical with loads of pulling power, my dad has a 04 discovery and if i had a choice of the 2 i would go for the pajero much more powerful and imo a better ride. my dad had to get his chipped to make up for the lower power of the discovery but the3.2 in the pajero is still more powerful

    Discovery. I'm biased :D

Pajero all the way. I'm biased, but having driven lots of 4x4's down through the years, the Pajero is the best. I have a SWB 3.2 which has (touch wood) been fantastically reliable over 75,000 miles, good on fuel, great in rough ground and great to pull a trailer. The only gripe I have is with the lack of carrying capacity in the rear, hence my recommendation for a LWB. Forget a SWB 2.5 litre Pajero, unless you like noise and "leisurely" performance.

What would I be looking at roughly, economy wise on a pajero (3.2l)? I'm looking at around '02, has there been any engine upgrades since that which would affect performance or economy? I still like the Disco but I havent seen any I'd go mad for yet and dont really want to go back down in engine size again either.:D

Would you not scrimp and scrape for a late 04 early 05? You'd defo get one cheap enough. Absolutely cracking jeep, engine and plenty of space and power. The only common problem is the electric handbrake but not to hard to get fixed.

If I could shift the Terrano then I could probably just about afford one, how are they on diesel though, I heard they were expensive to run.

My 3.2 pajero gets around 30 to the gallon, but if i go on motorways I'll get 32. (thats with no trailer and driving "economically")

2.7? Late 20's early 30's depending on the driving style. I would hugely advise test driviing one, go for one with the air suspension. Let the rest speak for itself. Sold a 05 recently with 180,000 on it, and besides a service, bid of bodywork, and that handbrake it was perfect. Timing belt is due around the 170 odd mark.

The 3.2 DiD is largely unchanged since it was brought out. The SWB has a smaller fuel tank than the LWB which is a pain in the ass. It's around 70Litres vs 100 I think. Mine (SWB) does around 400 miles from brim to when the light comes on, provided you're not pulling a trailer or driving the hole off it. After the light somes on, I'd say there's another 50 miles left in it.(The most I've tried is 40 miles :D )

i'm biased towards Paj's, but mines a 96 mk2, altho i don't see me ever getting rid of her tho, she'll be lovingly cared for till the day she dies a natural death. :)

afaik it's only the mk1's and 2's that are juicy, not the mk3. my mk2 2.8TD will *almost* make 25mpg if i drive it like miss daisy, but normally it's closer to 22mpg.

still wouldn't get rid of her tho, even if Ihad to sleep in her. :)

Thanks for all the replies, I had a test drive in a pajero 3.2 SWB on Sat. 70MPH and it wasnt even doing 2.5K rpm. Very wide compared to what I'm used to but seemed stable enough on the road. Very comfortable and seemed weel built, only problem is that it was 18 - 20K over budget.

Got offered 4K for my 02 terrano off another garage or 16k to trade up to a 03 Mitsu L200 with over 110K miles on the clock, dodgey tracking and a bad exhaust. :D
The car industry might be gone to the dogs but at least some people managed to keep their sense of humour.

I call mine "The cube", beacause it's low, wide and short. :D I've never driven a LWB, but I'd expect it to be steadier on the road than the SWB

    OT but,
Would Bus be a more appropriate term? I was trying to be more flattering than windowed van:D. Ballisodare in Sligo last Sat by any chance?

yepp, Ballysodare on Saturday, shopping at the butchers.

Says it right on the back what it is, a "Transporter".

    I drive a van and I'm proud :D

BTW ...shopping for cars (or any kind of vehicle) in Sligo is a very frustrating experience. The dealers around here are on a different planet when it comes to prices.
