    Hey,

I'm considering getting a new car in January and would like your opinions.

I have an max budget of about €27k - €28k.

It has to be diesel, have reasonable power, look good and low tax.

Two I have in mind are
    • Opel Astra Sport hatch 1.7CDTi
    • VW Golf GT 1.9 TDi - Mark VI
Any opinions on the above or any other suggestions? Thanks

I like that. It'd be stretching me a bit though.
Why is there no diesel Impreza available?

€28470 for the Golf GT TDI Sport 2.0 140BHP. Pocket Rocket!!!

Would love one personally. Its part of my list of cars for my new company car for 2010 amongst others.

Yea forgot about the focus. It's definately a runner.

I can't find the differences between the trims on the site though.

Pocket Rocket is stretching it a bit... (or a lot)

You should try the Mazda 3 too.

Hardly. The weight of the car, the torque and the bhp all add up to an extremely nippy little car.

Couple that with better trim, brakes, suspension, wheels and other ashtetic differences.

A little less than the GTI and much better than the mentioned focus. The best focus is the STI but its not in Diesel. The interior of the astra is all a bit plastic.

The '92 Civic SIR was a pocket rocket. A Golf is neither "pocket" or "rocket". It's grand with that 2 litre diesel, not a bad option for sure. But rocket is stretching it a good bit. And a GTI would embarrass it, which could potentially be called a rocket (but even that is pushing it in this day and age!)

You could probably pick up a 2008 diesel in your price range.

And the boxer diesel engine is only a new development in the high performance Subaru range

I'm sure if you went into a Subaru dealership with €27k in your hand for a new Legacy he would bite your hand off..

Seriously it's an awful lot of car for the money. Much better value than the Golf and better in every respect than the Astra. Not convinced by the looks of the Impreza.

It's the first option that sprang to mind.

A bit of bargaining should get you in to a 09 manual, or if you can find an ex. demo 08 DSG you'd be a happy man.

Superb car, extremely reliable and practical too.

If you can, get the DSG box. You can pick up one with only demo miles on it over here (UK) for about £11-12k.

Cars are a fluid product. Prices, market conditions and models are constantly changing. Regulars here would have already said what you're saying if it was true.

    Now on topic

Alfa Romeo 147 1.9 JTD DUCATI SS 170BHP
31k apparently. but I'm sure any Alfa dealers that are left at this stage would do a straight deal for €28k

Citroen C4 1.6 HDI 110BHP STYLE PLUS EGS €22k. You could probably add a few options and still get it for that price.

Fiat Bravo 1.9 MULTIJET 150 BHP SPORT. €27k, see the Alfa comment above, plus it's MUCH better looking:D:D

    Honda Civic 2.2 I-CTDI SE-S. €28k and I don't imagine much wriggle room.

Mazda Mazda6 2.0 TDI 140BHP EXECUTIVE SE. €30k, but it is a Mazda, so bulletproof and all as it is, you could batter the new price based on poor residual...

Try following a focus on a bad road in your "rocket".
OP , I would definitly test the focus diesel as well.

Oh really.........?? I don't think so !! I've a 5k bill for one of those engines sitting in my garage, so you couldn't give me one of those for free.

Actually, you could. But only to take the engine out and put it in my own yoke !:D

We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
