Time to change the old motor as its about 10 years old and as a result im going to spend a bit so i'll get another 5 years out of what i buy, im probably gonna buy a 05 or 06 in early 09 but i cant decide whether to go for an Audi A4, Bmw 5 series, Volvo S40 or VW Touraeg, very confused on which one to get, all advice gladly accepted and any suggestions regarding another possible buy also much appreciated.

If your going for the Toureg don't get the 2.5 tdi, it's an old truck of an engine.

After that, nice options, i'd be drawn more towards a nice 5-series with and m pack, diesel preferably.

Toureg is a bit crap to be honest, and sluggish with the 2.5 diesel. The s40 is nice but doesnt really excel. The Audi A6 is more comparable with the 5 series than the A4.

Personally I find Audis boring and would go for the 5 series. What about something different, Honda Accord? Or an Alfa 159?

I was looking at the accord and i think there lovely - the volvos seem very plain on the inside for the money you spend. Thanks for the info on the VW, nothing worse than buying a motor and after a few weeks discovering that its horrible. Im looking seriously at the 5 series but seems every single thing is extra in them. id be willing to spend around the 20k - 30k (max) on something 05 or 06 but its hard to know what to buy for that money. Hopefully pick up something cheaper around jan,feb of 09 seeing as it will be a new year and all

I think 04 530d new shapes are making in the 20's now, so more than likely you'll get what you want come January.

The Tourage is a very comfy 4x4, solid on the road but thristy and sluggish esp the automatic... the A6 is a great car, i had one before i got the Tourage, very well finished, great to drive, economical enough too, i was getting about 900-1000 km per tank and if i remember correctly the tanks capacity was 70 liters. The Toruage does about 11 km per liter on average, according to the trip computer. Be wary about buying a new 5 series cos there is a new model comming out late 09, the Volvo S40 is ok, my wife has one, the service costs for volvo are quite high and they dont hold their value, but then what new car does. What about a Subaru Outback or the new Passat CC !

Take the time and import a 5 series from the UK. They have lots of extras in the UK.

I was looking at a 08 5 series which after VRT import duty and the purchase price it was €48.

You should be able to pick up a great 05 Msport 5 series for €30 from the uk with loads of "bells and whistles" in it.

I dont like the Toureg- ugly. I have a 06 A4 so I like them. I like the S40 but its not in the league with the 5 series. I like the Lexus IS220d because its loaded with extras and a very good price.

    I highly suggest a BMW 5 series.

    Example

    http://www.carshop.co.uk/used-cars/view/61554
    €22,500
    €8372 VRT

Good Choice. You can browse for hours looking at BMW in approved BMW garages.

I have drove the 07 BMW 525d and omg that is my next car, probably have like 200k miles on it and will only cost around 10k but I really really want one.

Did I feel the big man, 24 years old driving my uncles hire car up and down the town. :D:P

In my honest opinion, if you can you shoud go for the BMW 5 Series.

Go across the water to the UK to pick up a nice one with all the extras and enjoy the drive home, go on spoil yourself! ;)

Thats a lot of money alright, i looked at a few english cars there on sites and i must say that you get a lot in the cars for your money, some have high mileage though, always have that feeling too that what happens if cars needs work 4 months down the line,,, you'll have ta drag car back to uk for it to be sorted.

That always annoyes me for some reason.

If the car needs work take it to any good mechanic. All cars are basically the same and any good mechanic should be able to fix it without any issue.

And if your spending that money the car shouldnt have any issues.

IF your spending that money, get one of those specialised RAC inspections, they will e-mail you a report on the car, so they do the inspection for you.

Plus, its a way of getting extra cash of the car, tell the dealer that the car is for export that you dont need any extra warranties extra, so knock off a couple of hundred for that alone.

Depends though, I bought a 5 in from the UK and the BMW 3 year warranty transferred over to here. If you can find a 5 with the five year servicing and warranty pack that may transfer too, could be worth looking into. BMW UK and Ireland are all the one now anyways.

    inside looks plain enough

The Toureg has a very cluttered panel and isn't much to speak of aesthetically.
