    Hi,

I've recently moved home and am pretty new to this Eircom broadband (I've been used to the unlimited caps of NTL until recently) and as far as I can tell there's a 10GB download limit (can't find any upload cap) on our 1mb broadband pack.

Is there any way for me to track what my total downloads and uploads are? I'm very broke for the next month, so I'd prefer if i didn't have to pay for a program, seeing as I've already used up the 30 day free trial Bandwidth Meter had given me, I'm little worried at how much I'm using...

Have a look at dslstats.eircom.net. Put in your phone and AC number. It ain't all that pretty but it does the job.

I just found that out actually! Thanks anyways... Do eircom usually charge the "one cent per mb" over the limit that they threaten or do they just do that in cases of the limit being abused?

*looks at download stats and freaks out!!*

Don't worry, they have never enforced their download limit, forget it.

    Phew!

But just to be safe, I'll relax when that bill comes in!!!

As per the charter/FAQ nobody can tell you 100% they won't charge you and if they do charge you you only have yourself to blame.

If you want to monitor your usage another way you could install netmeter (only really useful if you'eve the one PC) - http://www.metal-machine.de/readerror/

I guess it would help the OP to know from users.

Although you are liable to the charges, should you not download insane amounts ( Terrabytes) you will be fine.

In my like 3+ years experience with eircom, I've never been charged for going over the cap and I've gone over in some instances nearly 200%.

But you are liable to it, so I'd be wary...

Yeah, I was at 140% one month (the month I was worried about above) and at 120% another month, but they didn't charge extra either time.

I'm still playing it safe though. I know from experience, if you tend to constantly abuse these caps they'll come after you!

Uh oh, a change in policy is on the way perhaps?? See attached.

Seems fair enough that you should be able to buy extra download credit, but it seriously depends on the charge per Gb, and anyway the cap should be WAY higher to bring us in line with the US. Some DSL users over there are only now getting caps of abut 250Gb imposed on them per month and they're losing the rag over that "pittance"!

ps apologies if this has already been discussed on boards, haven't been here in a few weeks

I think that showed up in my dl stats at the start of November for a few days before it disappeared and the old stats page returned. I guess I'll know in a few days if it's still there.

Indeed. It tends to show up on the last/first day of the month as the cap is reset. Nothing to worry about.

Sticky says that people have actually been charged. Any details on this?

Gonna chime in to this thread with a question as there are some knowledgable folks here -

The eircom broadband (talktime/home starter? not sure) contract specifies a 10GB download and 1GB upload limit. The dslstats.eircom.net stats refer only to a Download Allowance. Does this mean that the upload is ignored when it comes to considering/charging for extra bandwidth usage?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,568 ✭✭✭ethernet

No limit on upload last time I checked. It's so slow in comparison to download it wouldn't make all that much sense capping that as well.

Thanks. I've always kept an eye on my upload total, guess I'll stop doing that now....12KiB does add up eventually:o
