With the weather getting colder and wetter we need to keep ourselves warm and also our piercings. They get whiney with the changing weather and stupid wind.

My lobes recently threw a b¡tch fit and swelled to stupid proportions. I just downsized but was told a handy trick by paddy in bodyshock. Basically if you've stretched lobes throw some vaseline on the jewellery (as long as they aren't organic) and that should stop them getting stroppy. Reasoning behind this is that the vaseline will insulate your ears somewhat and help retain heat.

Another one is to get a hat with flaps on it... something like the following :D

Anyway does anyone else have any good tips to avoid piercings getting all ick? Do share em :D

Seconding the earflap hats. They're apparently all the rage this winter too :p Not just for people with stretched piercings either, anyone with a lot of metal in their ear will benefit too!

I also have a wool hairband thing (couldn't find a decent pic online so excuse the crappy photobooth pic) for covering my ears. Handy if you're indoors and don't want to wear a hat:

Steel, stone and glass plugs will feel a hell of a lot colder than organics (wood/bone) and silicone.

Haven't tried the vaseline thing, must do that :) I oil my ears 2-3 times a day instead of once a day because they get sooo dry in the cold.

    :)
    Ha!
Now you know how my fingers feel!!!:p

I look forward to laughing at you Will, as you walk around campus with your hat with flaps.:D

A decent hoody type top should also do the job since, as it's joined to the top, the hood would also cover the ears?;)

Ditch the metal tunnels in ears for wood or plastic.

For male genital piercings: Do not run around on frosty nights/cold days with your bits hanging out. Or at least invest in one of these.

Why is it exactly that piercings go weird in cold weather?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,183 ✭✭✭✭Will

Cold weather drys out the skin, makes it hard and crackly and this doesnt bode well if you've pieces of metal in there.

There's more reasons I'm sure but i dont know em :-/

  • Registered Users Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

The metal conducts the cold right through the piercing, making it irritate the skin right through also (in the case of metal jewellery that is)

I've been wearing my generic hobo hat full time, i think i'll get a flappy one this week end. :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

But then you won't be our little hobo :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,721 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

    I'm a jedi, not a hobo!

And if you had come to the beers, you would have seen that i aint so little! :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,818 ✭✭✭Gauge

My earflap hat rules you all, for it is DOUBLE-SIDED! It's like having two hats in one!

My lobes are doing ok so long as I oil them twice a day minimum. My septum on the other hand, hates my guts :( ow

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,721 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

I don't get bad problems, maybe when im out biking and the wind is intense and cold but thats it, and i dont even have to oil them.

    Lucky me. :)
