C++ & webcam question

Ok, working on a project to do with image analysis, my question is; is it possible to write C++ code to 'talk' to a usb camera, webcam or otherwise, without a specific SDK for the camera. i.e. is there a generic solution to find a usb cameras and grab and save an image from it? so far all I've been able to find are…

Any ideas?

I haven't done any webcam stuff in c++, only Java, but I imagine TWAIN is what your looking for (Technology Without An Interesting Name). Twain is an imaging API (scanners and cams) available on most/all windows computers.
