Do people pick sides without knowing policies?

Just from speaking to a few Americans on various different forums, and reading debates.. It became apparent that people tend to pick sides from the get-go, without even reading into policies.

It seems that the media will always cast someone as the liberal, and the other as the right-winger. The population will then flock to the conveniently created category for them.

It could be something as simple as Fox News criticising Obama, and then a viewer - judging on Fox's prior record in terms to who they show support for (generally the right-wing lobby), will vote Obama. Or the other way around.

What are people's thoughts on this?

you know i do actually believe that some people pick sides without knowing policies and
especially so here in Ireland where i know some people who are in certain political parties because their parents/grand-parents were ... and if you were to ask them for that politcial party's stance is on any issue, they are lost and just give you their own opinion.

Some people just find it easier to follow as opposed to stand back and ask 'what is your policy on xyz' or even research it themselves
