How does this work? Does it actully produce smoke? Does it use bb's?

It fires the gas through a powder (talcum powder) cartridge, which expels it.
It can fire BB's too, you load the BB's internally into a chamber.
When loaded with gas, the unit hinges open and sprays both BB's and powder out. Ideal for boobytraps.

You can use green gas, 134a is best for a long delay, 6 - 7 seconds.
Begadi & Cybergun are best for medium delay. 2 seconds of gas for 3 - 5 seconds delay.
Ultrair & taiwan green for short fuses. 2 seconds of gas for an instant detonation on release of the arming handle.

Sperminator here on Boards has one. You should ask him for independant advice.
