Bora TDI starting problems

My brother's '99 VW Bora 110hp TDI (170k miles) is acting oddly. On the first start of the day it doesn't catch and a fair amount of blue smoke rumbles out of the exhaust. When it does start it's lumpy for a second or too and then runs normally. On any subsequent start it's fine and it runs well. It does have the old VW TDI engine ECU issue (occasional juddering as the RPM falls through 1100) but apart from that it's grand.

    Any ideas?

that would be the head off the engine. when the engine is cold, oil leaks down the valve stems (causing the blue smoke)when its warm the stems expand, oil cant leak down. i wouldn't worry about it too much, doesnt cause any real harm. be pricey enough to get it fixed. A tip would be to warm up the engine quickly.
