Pads&Disks!

    Question:

    If your brake pads and disks need changing and the person only changes the pads; and after a weeks driving the squeaking sound is still there, does the car need new disks and another set of new pads?

    This is happening to me at the moment. I went in and the guy changed the pads but didn't bloody spot that the disks too were worn; hence, new pads were now braking onto worn disks. Then he changes the disks and leaves on the new pads. Still the squeaking sound. Wait for it; I brought the car back and he then puts on the second set of new brake pads; with the new disks still on. Did these new disks pick up filings from the pads resulting in them needing to be changed again?

    Does this car need new disks and pads put on at the same time?

    Because if NOT, the pads will pick up filings from the worn disks and continually transfer
    these filings to any new disks installed.

    If the new pads were only driven for a week on the old discs, then when the discs were replaced, a rub of the braking surface on the pads on a sheet of sandpaper should have been enough to give them a fresh flat surface.

    If you have new brake pads & discs and still have a problem with brakes squealing, the cause I've found in the past has been:

    (1) Poor quality brake pads or discs

    (2) Failure to use copper grease, or not fitting an anti-squeal shim to the back of the pad, which you will usually get from an OE manufacturer such as Abec, Mintex or Ferodo...

    Thanks mate. I was told today to allow 200 miles for the brake pads to embed in.
    I'll give it until then; but I have a funny feeling that the initial screw up in not replacing the worn disks at the same time the new pads were changed has caused this domino effect.

    It results in the transfer of filings from pads to disks etc; and will continue to do so up until new pads and disks are put on together. Thanks again!

    No, it doesn't. I have often put new pads on disks which have clocked over 100k miles.

    So, am I to assume that all should be okay, and that when the 200 or so miles to embed occurs, the squealing should cease?

    I have to change one of the front disks on my car due to wear and the mechanic said it was best to change the pad as well even though he said the pad was ok. So looks like it's best to change the pad if the disk needs replacing.
    According to him anyways

    However he quoted me €200 to do. Seems a bit expensive to me for one disk/pad?

    walshb - If you don't mind me asking, how much did your mechanic charge you?

    This is not a intention to hijack the thread. Just the issue is along the same lines

    Its usually a bad idea to do only one brake disk, you do both at the same time otherwise there might be issues with ABS and equal braking forces on both sides

    ALWAYS change discs and pads on both sides at the same time. It is accaptable to fit new pads on worn discs so long as they have not reached their wear indicators but never fit old pads on new discs.

    The charge for two front pads and disks was 220. To be honest, anything to do with tyres and brakes and shocks and pads, go to Kwik Fit and those who specialise
    in this work. I wouldn't go to a mechanic for this type of work. Anyway, the guy I went to is a tyre dealer and he also does this work; but obviously, this time it was shoddy work.

    Next time, I am going direct to Kwik Fit, as previously I had work done by them and all was PERFECT!

    sounds like you have non-OEM (read cheap) pads, that is causing your squealing. It is nothing to do with mechanic's lack of skill.

    I'm the same way. I did the RSA FREE ROAD SAFETY TEST with Advance Pitstop and they told me about my front left disk being worn and also front shocks to be done. For some reason I don't want them to do the work as heard a few bad stories about them
