I think the key thing here is that, irrespective of your support for one candidate over another, this is a historic moment in our lives. The same way the falling of the Berlin Wall was, Nelson Mandela being released, the Omagh bombing, the Good Friday Agreement, 11th September 2001 etc.,

This is an event that will come to be one of the moments that defines us as a civilisation, and an event that students will read about in history books in decades. Just like we studied the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the Easter Rising in 1916, the Nazi invasion of Poland, D-Day, the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the assassinations of JFK, MLK & RFK, the lunar landing.

It is as momentous as any of those, as it would've been had Hillary Clinton been elected. In years to come, our children will ask us about these times that we've lived through, just liked I've asked my parents about the moments they lived through. That what history is about, and us witnessing these events is our little part in history.

I didn't really have a strong preference for either candidate, as a Presidential Candidate has to pander to so many demographics and interest groups that they basically become a jack of all trades just to get into the Oval Office. I think we saw tonight that John McCain was a top man, who was gracious in defeat, and probably wasn't overly happy with the choice of Palin as a running mate. Unfortunately it was probably a decision he had to take to inject some momentum into the campaign, and also to appeal to a certain type of Republican voter.

So, no matter what your political view, look back on the election race with good memories, as it's kept us entertained and made us think in ways that we probably never would've considered had it been any different. Enjoy the event, and don't let it pass you by, as it's historic, and no doubt we'll all reflect on it in years to come as a moment that changed the world we live in.

Now, ffs, I've just realised this sounds like an Obama speech . . . time for a kip!:D

Well done Obama. It'll be interesting to watch how him over the next 4 years.

Just watching the speeches now. Great words from McCain. Palin got a good reaction from the crowd and seemed quite emotional.

    Just watching Obama now.

Keep an eye on the NYTimes election maps. It's live and slowly turning blue :D
Many racists are turning blue too due to lack of breath in shock.

Election Results for Democrats (Presidential/Senate/Representatives) is on par with Tony Blair win his first landslide election (1997) win as leader in Britain which left Tories feeling sick with the blues, which only now in 2008 they are beginning to recover from it, now that Tony is gone.

Bush must be red at this point.

Congratulations to Obama and also to McCain who has earn my respect for his respectful comments for Obama against racists and for his humble speech this morning.

backed up by a potential majority in the senate and the house if the dems dont sort the country out in the next 4 years they wont see any power for long time...
Two Years time is when some seats in the House of representative and senate are up for grabs.

Democrats and Obama needs to turn the economy around before then (2010) if they want to keep the privilege in retaining the majority in both houses and for the White House to be successful in the remaining two years, so Obama can successfully run to retain his position in the Next Presidential election in 2012.

America will be glad to come back to the Republicans and they will in droves yet. From one right wing moderate to a left wing black Islamic named liberal marxist.... A hollywood producer couldn't have scripted it.

Nov 4th 2008 the day the liberal facisists took over America and it became a single party state.

wow aren't you bitter that your party lost.

Nice speech from McCain. Anyone hear the booing during McCains speech when he mentioned Palin? I reckon she was a big part of the main reason he lost so badly.

She's the reason I voted for Obama. And voting for him made me very uneasy

McCain made a good concession speech. Thank Christ Obama got in. Palin was a scary woman.

The thought of Sarah Palin being a heart beat away from the nuclear launch codes would have been too much !

Can sleep now. In peace !

    :)

So your euphoria is based on the fact that the chances of Sarah Palin becoming president in the next 4 ayers are now nil, rather than what Obama can do for the good of America ?

Any speculation as to the makeup of Obama's cabinet. I know John Kerry has been tipped for Secretary of State anything else?

There may be a place for one John McCain in there somewhere, not to mention Colin Powell, oh and William Ayers (sp)...that last one was a joke.

This comment on the BBC website has me welling up :o
Erick Dillard, Virginia, US: My family came here as slaves in 1703. For the first time in my life I feel like an American. No longer a black American, just an American. This is for my father who died this year before he could see this day. This is a toast to America, may we be truly one nation and one nationality.

It really feels like the world has changed overnight. I know Obama has yet to be tried and tested and he has the weight of the world's expectations on his shoulders, but something amazing has already been achieved. This is gonna be one of those "where were you when...?" moments I think.

Just wanted to express my delight at Obama's win! McCain also gave a very gracious speech, fair play to him. I never thought I'd see this in my life time. :D:D:D

I got mildly emotional listening to Obama talk about the 108 year old black woman who voted for him :o Very cool

And fair play to McCain, nice concession speech

There was an old woman - the great great great grand-daughter of a slave - on RTE news last night saying similar stuff. Very moving... :o

I enjoyed McCain's concession speech. Really looked like he swallowed his pride and said what he had to say, as well as shunning the crowd when they booed Obama. Fair play to him

If anything, I wouldn't be surprised if he took a disliking to his supporters
