    Dear Serenacat,

For some very bizarre reason I remembered this piece of trivia in the middle of the night. Someone had told me that nearly always a totally ginger cat is
    MALE.

I found something about it online:

    http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070902110426AA6g4O2

So maybe it is actually worth calling that Swords person re the gender of the missing cat! Maybe even the site made a mistake.

    Jaki
Here is their ad 'Mauw is a 13 year old family pet. She is nervous of strangers but can be enticed with a soft tone and low level face contact. She understands the words 'come here' and usually responds. She is spayed etc and may have been wearing her red collar with VIP diamante letters'
The cat I found I brought to the vet and the vet told me it was a neutered male and nearly all ginger cats are female! I could call but feel dumb saying I found a male if their ad clearly says they lost a female. What do you think?

With a statement like that I wouldn't take his word for it that it's a neutered male, it's the opposite, nearly all ginger cats are male. I don't know if it's the right terminology but tricolours (black, ginger and white) I think are nearly always female, but full gingers are nearly always male.

I met a woman once who thought her ginger FEMALE cat was pregnant! Turned out it was a male cat who'd put on a bit of weight recently! :D

Yes, I think you should call.

For some reason some people just always say 'she' with cats anyway. Very odd.

Gingers are nearly always male - so you could always say that's what you heard - and maybe find a way to email/text the picture of the cat you found? That one with him on the blue rug is lovely.

    Hope it goes well.

Oh to be a gender bending ginger cat.

    Keep us posted.

Trying to get a pic now, pm me if it sounds like yours.

A bit of good news to keep people's hopes up - our cat Puddy turned up on our doorstep last night after being missing 6 weeks. Have no idea what happened, how he managed to get back, etc, but glad to see him! So don't give up hope.

    Great news about Puddy.

I noticed him on my rounds of checking out for my missing cat Iggy, who went missing just before Puddy.

    Was he neutered?

Ours is neutered - but they still go off. We didn't find any sign of a body so have to assume he's still alive somewhere.

Bet you're feeling good about Puddy's return.

    Great stuff.

Yup, he's neutered alright. I wonder does he normally range further afield than we think - hence he was able to find his way back - or was it pure luck. (He's originally ran away from his minder who lives about a mile from us.)

I'm hoping someone can help me. This evening coming home from work, I noticed a young dog on Smithfield Square, he had a lead on, but was very distressed.

I couldn't leave him, he was running on the Luas line, running up to people and looked so lost.

I've taken him in for the night, got some dog food and tried ringing the DSPCA. The lady was very helpful, but said they didn't deal with stray dogs. I don't know what to do. I'm in a one bed apartment, not allowed dogs, and supposed to be in work tomorrow.

I've tried ringing the dog pound, but no joy. Can anybody offer any advice? He's a lovely little dog and I couldn't bear to think of him lost.

I'd say you need to try and get a print out of his picture and put it around the area.

  • Registered Users Posts: 107 ✭✭Ailishcrehan

The Dogs Trust, DSPCA etc don't take in stray dogs, as legally they have to go to the pound. You should ring the dog warden tomorrow and try get the poor pet collected. Failing that, local rescue groups might be able to help but the reason most wont take strays (unless injured, sick, too young etc) is because there is a legal requirement that strays go to the pound. If he goes to the pound, then he has some hope of being reunited with his owners. If that is not an option for you, ask around some of your friends and see if they can mind the dog while you are at work tomorrow and stick posters up...if he had a lead on, we at least know that someone is missing him and is probably frantic with worry. Post it on www.irishanimals.ie and on www.lostdogs.ie

Fair play for taking him in, too many turn a blind eye sadly

just saw the picture, what a stunning puppy!! I'd take the day off work tomorrow and try find his owners if that is at all possible. If he has to go to the pound, chances are, he will find a home as he is gorgeous!

    Hi there.

"Giggsy" was let out on Saturday morning, Jan. 29th in COOLDRINAGH LANE, Leixlip - near Becketts Restaurant. He's black and white (pretty much the double of the Felix cat on the ads) and neutered. He has a red collar with an ID tag on it and is only 7 months old.

Please let me know if you see him. We're very worried. We've been letting him out since he got neutered and he has never ventured far from the door and has always been close by when we call him in. It's been 2 days now and we're fearing the worst.

    Thanks.

GIGGSY was found this morning thanks to a lovely lady who rang Pet Trace!! Thank God for him being chipped!!

5 days out in the Wilderness and he's safe and sound! WOHOOO!!

On Sunday 30th of January, a female German Shepherd went missing from our family home in the Dromahair/Killargue area. This dog is a family pet and belongs to a 12 year old boy, who is absolutely devastated in grief over the loss of this dog. If you or anyone has any information that will lead to the recovery of this dog there will be a €500 reward. She is 2 years old, sable in colour and answers to the name of Elsa. She is neutered and microchipped. ANY information will be gratefully appreciated.

Found this afternoon (Mon, Feb 7) outside NUI,Galway Reading Room.
Brought him to the vets, he's chipped, but the chip isn't registered.
He's wearing a black collar with no ID tag, but with what seems to be an rusty chain hook. Appears to be around 6 years old or so!
    Quite the handsome chap!;)

This cat is seriously tame very cuddly and was found crying in the rain. Let me know if you think this could be yours I can take some more photos as well.

Hey I have offically decided to keep this cat now, I think I have waited long enough to find owner so am going to get him microchipped and buy a collar, any objections feel free to post.
    Thanks, serenacat

Hmmm - you're very good to take him in and I'd be thinking the same, but "any objections feel free to post" does not mean you are now indemnified! ;) I mean it in the best way, but one of my friends took in a stray dog recently. We searched high and low for the owner who was not to be found. She went off and got him vaccinated (turned out he was chipped but not updated), bought flea drops and worming tablets, and of course grew very attached. Owner turned up suddenly yesterday and she had to give him back. That was three weeks of course, I suppose the owner becomes less of a one as time goes on. Just be careful you don't get disappointed!

edit: actually begs the question if you spend a lot of money on an animal and the owner turns up, should you be reimbursed? Will post it in a new thread.

If I found the owner or owner sees the cat on any site posted I will of course give him back but its been over a month now so seems very unlikely, I took him to the vet and got worming tablets and flea drops too and would mention that to the owner as cost 49.0 euro so would be nice to get that back.
It would be very bittersweet if we found the owner, but want to buy a collar and other cat things for him at this stage.

Our family pet has been missing since lunch time on the 8th of February

She is a pretty distinctive British Bulldog coloured white and fawn and she wouldnt really blend in anywhere very well.

We are all very upset, she is a very timid, gentle dog, she is afraid of loud noises, isnt very energetic and has never been outside the house for long so im baffled as to where she could have got to.

She has breathing difficulties and some other health issues aswell so she wouldnt be suitable for breeding and would be of no value to anybody. She was last seen in cashel park Castlerea in front of our house!
Please if you have seen her or been offered a dog that sounds similar contact me,
