Analysis of Eircom DSL Exchanges End 2008

By end 2008 eircom will have enabled approx 750 exchanges out of approx 1180 leaving 330 undone . That is 70%. Who would have believed it of them ??

Next year will see a further 100 done outside the NBS funding envelope

2010 and 2011 will see a further 100-150 done while some more fibre cabs will roll out to take the total of exchanges over 1200

Once the NBS rollout is complete some 100 exchanges will not be done, all small and some absolutely tiny with only 10s of lines .

Just over 3 years ago I bought a house in Croom after being told by Eircom that it was on the list to be done by the end of the year. In 2006 they told me it would be done by August, then by Christmas. In 2007 they said in the first quarter and then they said by year end.

In 2008 I was told end of quarter 1, end of quarter 2, end of quarter 3 and last week they told me mid December.

I will believe it when I actually have a working connection.

And of course the exchange you are connected to being "enabled" in now way ensures you can actually get DSL! The whole thing is a very sad joke.

Them NOT being enabled frequently GUARANTEES you cannot get Broadband unless there is a WISP in the area

Knipex, the Croom exchange was only announced for upgrade in March 2007 , see here , so you should complain to Comreg about the eircom staff who lied to you ....seemingly well before any announcement .

Then again I heard of someone in Limerick whose exchange was due to be upgraded in 2001 according to what they told him. It still hasn't been done :rolleyes:

We only went past 50% of exchanges enabled in early 2008 . We shall finally approach 50% geographic coverage for DSL by the end of this year and will pass it in 2009 .

Parents are in Achill and are waiting for the day broadband will be available to them.
I see there is one exchange enabled in Achill (Achill Sound) but I believe there is another exchange there (not sure of the name of it) which they are connected to. Who should I direct a query at to a) find out the name of the exchange and b)Find out if this exchange will ever be enabled?
Odds are they will never be able get BB through the phone line anyway but you never know.

Still can't get it via phone, WISP in the area is OK, but it's a joke really to enable enchanges when you know most customers will not be able to get BB when the line lengths are too great & pair-gain is in use.

In fact, even just trying to use dial-up is a pain - 5kbps speed, 5 minute wait just to load google and disconnections once you stray away from google.
We are with TalkTalk but when we ring them they say its Eircoms problem, when we ring Eircom they dont want to know because we are with TalkTalk.
The voice side of things are just as bad - assuming the phoneline is actually working, the phone rings for no particular reason, the line is very crackly and we can barely hear the person at the other end. When we contacted eircom about that problem they sent out some group they have subcontracted to fix it. They only succeeded in taking our problem and spreading it to everyone else who lives in the area. Last time they were out was in July - the problem has been going on for a year and a half to two years now. Dont know what to do, its very frustrating.

Wireless broadband is not an option as the area is quite hilly - to get a mobile signal we have to go up the road a bit.

By the description of your line you could be living next door to a BB exchange and still not get it.:p

yup. as i said its very frustrating. The thing is, the 3 new houses in the area (built in the last 3-4 years) seem to be unaffected by the problems the rest of us are facing - still very slow dial-up though.

You should, without a shadow of a doubt, focus eircom's attention on the voice quality. That appears to be the only thing they care about. My own line deteriorated and it affected both broadband and voice. Called them up about the voice, engineer showed up two days later and fixed it. The broadband is since then perfect too (within the limits of eircom's service of course).

You need to keep at it. I think voice is part of the universal service obligation so I think they actually have to fix it.

We have banged on about voice for years. A bad voice line will usually be a bad broadband line .

The guide for the stupid with iffy broadband is

1. Get a Crisp Bag, empty or full . DO Open the crisp bag if full.
2. Ring 1901 , press some number to get faults.
3. Complain about the voice quality while Vigourously Scrunching the Crisp Bag about an arms length away from the phone

I have been driven demented looking for broadband here in my area of Mayo for years, it feel like i live in Ethiopia. I shall be going with Westnet at the end of December if they dont deliver on the promise of our exchange. I have been online since 1996 when i joined with Indigo and 56k was ok then. A few years ago it became unusable and the internet now is not really built for dial up as we all WELL know. Lived in LOndon for 2 years and was on 6mb - now getting crap 02 3G

As a journalist I have been on to Eircom for two years and I did get it confirmed that my exchange BELCARRA (Mayo) would be done end of December and I see it there on the list. Apparently you need to be 5km from the exchange which we are - i think - so what other difficulties could arise. How many peoples exchanged get enabled and then run into difficulties?. I am researching an article and today was talking to Perlico (who told me wrongly the exchange was enabled) and then the woman at Eircom who put in the order and I then found out it wasn't enabled. One woman told me 99% of people who when they put their order in get amber eventually get it ok, while another older guy said it was only 50/50 - if you get that when you put your number in on the can I get broadband - but usually people get it

Can anyone explain exactly what problems could arise, and if my exchange is enabled and I am UNLUCKY in the extreme to have problems is there anything I can do, ComReg etc

Can someone explain WISP ? Generally has anyone figures on the percentage of people whoses exchanges are enabled but who still cant get broadband. The situation is insane - along with spam its my pet hate - lack of broadband

WISP.

The figures you talk of are secret. It's generally considered to be anything from 15 to up to 80% of lines connected fail to get broadband (with 80% be the more extreme estimation for rural exchanges where lines are very long and of very poor quality). The actual figures, only eircom can tell!

So much for the old biddy on the Eircom support line tellin me 99% went through - then the next guy 50/50 but more than likely

I am SICK of Eircom. If my line is not ok after waiting years for the exchange to be enabled I will infliltrate Eircom and do a Nick Leeson

I bet this end of December lark for my exchange will only be a cod as well

If the line does fail - is there anything you can do - ie if the quality is the problem and not the distance from the exchange

I am hoping Westnet will work if all else fails, they couldnt deliver last January because trees were in the line of sight but apparently now they can cover where I live

The broadband situation is like a 3rd world country here - I interviewed the top guy in Perlico yesterday and he told me my exchange was enabled - and then I find out he is talking baloney

If you are close enough (not as the crow flies, but the route your phone line takes), and still fail, they'll take an Amber order. The Amber program is where they'll have a more detailed look at your order, and your line, and do a best-effort install attempt.

That is, if your line is split (a common reason a failing), they'll try and remove the splitter, if they can (actually, they'll probably just try and move another neighbour on to it, instead).

Bear in mind, that poor internal wiring (or cheap modems/fax machines/old alarms) is often at fault as well. That's your responsibility, and an Amber order won't get those fixed.

Hi Trevor,

You can blame Eircom but it's not really their fault and even if it was (I sense a flood of posts disagreeing with this) then they are under no obligation whatsoever to sort it out.

The government has dropped the ball in a big way on this. I'm not going to go through it all here but PM me or contact me via williamstownoffline.com if I can help further.

The Govt yes, in the Celtic Tiger era we should have been at the forefront of broadband technology. I know its not Eircoms total fault - I have followed the whole situation and knew the incompetence that was going on but I just never believed I would feel like I lived in a 3rd world country technologically.

Understandable that you feel that way.

I have been to Cambodia which I would think is classed as 3rd world and it had good broadband as far as I could see (at least in major towns/cities). I was in a town hours from anywhere on the edge of a desert in Australia that had good broadband. There are people less than a half hour drive from Galway city who can't get any broadband (hello to Belclare ppl).

That site epitomises my frustration totally. The letter in the Tuam Herald, the stories of having to go up onto a hayshed in an attempt to get a signal just epitomises the scandal the whole situation is. It is farcical. You would swear Williamstown was in a cave in Pakistan where the Taliban hide out in - not a place in a country who has just come out of one of the worlds great economic booms.

In todays world no broadband is like the dark ages - and for Eircom and a government to have a situation where nobody is entitled to a service that is as important as having access to a postman its laughable

Those PDF files - where did you locate them. I dont see Belcarra on them at all yet its on the file at the start of this thread for the end of this year, and I was told by the PR person that we would be done

I do not see my exchange Belcarra (Mayo) listed on that yet I was told by the PR person at Eircom that Belcarra would be done end of December. It's on the long list at the start of the thread. Please tell me I ain't been told my exchange is being enabled and its apparently not

Yes that is my/our site (williamstownoffline.com).

We got the pdf's from another thread on this site but they were also sent to us anonymously!

It is a little questionable how up to date they are but I think they would be over 90% correct.

On other data I have, I checked Belcarra (incidentally my grandmother grew up there!) and it's down as being due for upgrade. I know it sounds totally daft but be grateful for that. I can see other places around where you live and you can tell the people living there that they may never have dsl broadband - at least there is no plan for it. These are places like Hollymount, Cloonagh, Parke - this is according to the info I have which is as up to date as I think possible. To those people all I can suggest is you kick up the biggest fuss possible. Eircom are no obligation to do anything and from a business point of view it's probably not profitable for them to even think about doing anything.

By the way sign our petition to keep up to date on where we are at and if we can help at all PM (private message) me or email us via williamstownoffline and I'll give you my mobile number. We'd be happy to help/advise other communities. Bottom line is DO SOMETHING - someone suggest to me recently we park our cars outside TD's houses and say they won't be moved til they start to work on the problem. One politician we contacted we suspect he did not know what broadband is and he definitely didn't know whether his area had it or not.

You'll love this...my wife actually called Eircom before we moved house (we previously had broadband) to verify that we would be able to connect from the new place. They told her "Fine, no problem. You can get BB where you're going. Just give us a couple of weeks' notice.". So we buy the house, move in, and expecting a couple of weeks' delay call Eircom again...only to hear "You're where? Lemybrien? God, no. No broadband there. It's on the list to be done before Christmas."

Great. This was in September. They still insist Lemybrien is on the list and will be done before Christmas. It's not on the list posted here nor any of the other ones I've found.

O2...I can barely get a voice connection outside the house.
Vodafone, I can get voice, but only weak GPRS.
Our house is in a tiny gap in the 3 coverage map for our area.

I can literally get nothing other than (possibly) dialup or satellite. I can't afford satellite and I hear nothing but bad things about it anway.

So no internet for me. And I'm a programmer.

If you NEED Broadband for your work and are moving house then ensure it is connected and tested before you close the deal on the move .

You wouldn't move somewhere with no road if you needed to drive to work every morning ...by the same logic .

Lemybrien Co Wateford is scheduled to be done sometime in 2009 and is on the list of 319 announced in March 2007 . That is if you have an 051291nnn number . If not you could be on a different exchange .

No, of course not. I don't actually NEED it for work - it's just a major inconvenience. It wouldn't have stopped me moving if I'd known, but as I was misled by Eircom (albeit unintentionally, I imagine), it gives me someone to blame!

I saw no reason to question it when I was told by Eircom that I could have it at the new house.

Thanks for the info, though - I am on that exchange, so at least it appears I'm on the list. Other than assurances from the same people who told me the exchange was already enabled, this is the first mention I've seen of Lemybrien being on the radar. I can deal with waiting, as long as I have reason to believe that I'm not waiting in vain.

Got a knock at the door last night from some person from Eircom "Broadband is now in your area...." Upgrade of Lemybrien exchange was completed end of last week and they are taking orders. I won't believe it until I actually get it up and working but maybe, just maybe....
