Dylan, Bowie, Brian Wilson. Some suggest McCartney, but the quality of his work has been inconsistent at times, and dead dodgy at others.

    Little Richard.

Bruce Springsteen, but don't tell anyone.........a very cynical friend of mine who likes all music from Clash to Crosby Stills went to the RDS last summer and said it was 'the best rock concert I've ever been at'. He only went because of the hype.

Personally I think it's better that some people don't get it, makes it simpler for fans. I don't want to ram it down people's throats. Anyone who has seen him in concert will have the same opinion.

He's the most important to me, but I doubt he is to music - I mean, would rock be appreciably worse off without him?

Robert Plant/Jimmy Page, Bob Dylan, Brian wilson ,McCartney ,Bowie ,Stevie wonder ,Mary wilson Clapton CSNY, Taylor ,Mcguinn etc .

It's because of these people and quite a few more i am still in love with music today, as i was when i could first walk, and when i first heard them .:)

see your point, depends how the original question is interpreted i suppose, but he remains still alive, a music legend and very important.

David Bowie, John Fogerty, Chuck Berry, Paul McCartney... most other names I'd bother to mention have already been said.

Out of everyone I'd go with Bowie as most important still alive not just because of his own fantastic output but also other projects he had involvment with. Notably the two albums he produced with Iggy Pop, Transformer with Lou Reed, and his musical influence on others.

Thom Yorke and Richard D James for me.

Brian Wilson all the way for me.

Don't think there's been any women mentioned yet, so i'll throw in Joni Mitchell and Patti Smith.

    I second that actually.

On the subject of women, and i'm probably gonna get slated for this. But i'd have to also give their genre credit for this. Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin. Both of them pretty much stepped down to pass the torch onto the next generation instead of p*ssing away their legacy like the likes of Witless Houston.

That can be said for most artists, in fairness.

Anyone who's been making music for 20+ years is hardly going to release a classic album every single time. However, there's no denying the influence of the Beatles on modren day music. Imo, McCartney hasn't had as much influence.

    For me:

David Bowie is up there. The man's released a dozen great albums and has shaped music so much.

Prince too, another one who's shaped music for so many people.

George Clinton is one who hasn't been mentioned yet. He is a musical genius. He perfected an entire genre and also influenced millions of artists.
