Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Future Sound of Electronica

How do you think electronica in all its myriad styles is going to evolve (both technologically and sound wise) in the future or will it become like other musical styles that are a product of a bygone era?

An impossible question to answer really, although i can see a resurgance of keyboards and piano's and uplifting tunage as there has been too much darkness over the last few years, maybe a return for Happy House :pac::D

I don't think electronic music as a whole is going in any one direction, the sub genre's seem to take their own paths really. Techno has been solid since almost forever. House is always a firm the pillar of electronic music but takes its own twists and turns. Electro house came in with a bang and then died a bit of a death (probably cause there was so much shockingly bad electro being thrown out) and obviously minimal is the new wave but its more of a slow burner and will only ever have a smaller audience.

Technology is the one major change I suppose - its always evolving and bringing new possibilities. The one thing i like (although some may disagree) is that any kid in his basement with a few grands worth of equipment and lots of talent can jump to stardom. Aparently Calvin Harris made his album for near zero cost in his bedroom.

Similar to what Johnny was saying, I'd like to see a comeback of more natural sounds, not necessarily happy house but maybe a more towards less synthesised and more organic perhaps.

I also think Hardcore Breaks http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardcore_breaks will eventually go overground as it is definitely gaining popularity in the UK, i personally hope it remains underground but sure i said that about Hardcore in 1991 as well and look how massive that became in 92 :D It's new and fresh music emcompassing the sound of Old Skool Rave/Hardcore which in itself was groundbreaking and could not be allowed to just fade into obsecurity so a group of people passionate about that music started making new tracks and word spread and now there are many labels releasing tracks, some are brilliant, some not so good, but in general ive been well impressed with most of the stuff ive heard, here is a free download if anyone wants to give it a listen, given Irish clubbers' general dislike of all things breakbeat i don't expect many to particulary like it, but give it a try.

techno will continue to keep going strong as ever, and the borders between minimal and techno will continue to blur.

labels i expect to be very popular in the next year - harthouse (already popular i know), be as one (shlomi aber's imprint), Sci+Tec (massive despite being new.

labels who normally release monster records every so often and probably will in the next twelve months - ovum, bpitch and get physical.

oh and electro will continue to bring kids into techno. and that whole ed banger/justice thing will fade.

I find it interesting to go back in time to when I first lived in London in 1988 and was exposed to early house tunes such as The House that Jack Built, Doctorin' the House, Can You Feel It and other early classics. Then witnessing the sudden explosion of Acid House on the scene with its bleepy, squelchy sounds and how it morphed into house and its many sub genres.

I have been into the house/techno scene since its inception and have seen it change dramatically over the course of those years since first being exposed to it, seeing how the technology has moved on from basic synthesizers, drum machines, samplers, 303's, 404's and 808's to its present day techno wizardry which I admit am not too well up on being out of the scene for some time but still very much into the music both old and new.

Piano's are making a comeback folks, the music over the last few years has generally been too dark, it's new tunes like this gem which i cant wait for which will be rocking clubs:)

Dubstep for me has been keeping things fresher than anything else since the early 2000's. Its still the newest, most exciting genre of music I have heard in a long time. It has so many styles within it and can be mixed with reggae, funky house, techno...such a variety of sounds within one bass driven genre. Even the bpm going from 140 to 70 and back again the energy of good dubstep on a properly set up system is unparalleled ...... In 1999 no-one knew this style would of grown out of garage/2-step so who knows what the future has in store...

    Still loving the techno though!

A lot of Dubstep is cool, then again a lot of it rubbish, im in 2 minds about it!

The thing about Dubstep is that it's lacking in originality and relys on sampling other tracks too much, nothing wrong with sampling but most of the Dubstep tracks ive heard have all sampled other tunes.

just because a tune contains a sample doesnt mean it lacks originality, 99% of all electronic music contains samples in some form or another, unless you actually record in every kick drum and snare hit from a live drum kit, your tune isnt original, same with all the synths, basslines and the way they sound , is all pre-sampled.

and wait a minute.......dubstep, as a whole genre isnt lacking in originality, sure some of it is, every genre has tunes that lack in originality in some form or another....but if you take an artist like burial, or the bug or kode9, some of these are pushing the borders of what originality is...especially burial, his music is simply special.

i,m sure alot of oldskool is cool(i wouldnt know)....as i am sure alot of it is rubbish too, same with techno, drum n bass, hip hop any genre you can think of.

you have to dig deep and dive into a genre before you can truly pass judgment on it, as the artists you first hear of generally aren't pushing boundaries or doing anything special....

my original point still stands though, dubstep, for the last few years has been the most exciting style of music that has grown out of anything. cant think of anything to happen recently that mirrors it...

You most likely know far about Dubstep than i do, im basing my opinion on the stuff ive heard in one or two clubs and festivals like Sibin and Life, some of the tunage was really good and some was downright rubbish tbh it just appeared to me it either sounded excellent or cringeworthy but almost every tune i heard had samples of various older tunes so that's what i said what i said,if there is Dubstep out there that is original then please send some my way so i can listen to it, im still in 2 minds about Dubstep as i said.

that was skream and mala. i was there up the front giving it socks!! actually i couldnt understand why more people were freaking out, maybe cause it was a sunday?,....

heres some youtube links of various dubstep...

Wounder - Burial.a chilled out tune, not one for the dancefloor, the sub bass is in this just does it for me, needs to be listened on good headphones or great speakers at loud volume or ya might as well not listen to it all.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c97HLE4F05I

    midnight request line - skream
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGXXlEJ5qn4

archangel - burial. a simply beautiful track
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hI4bSCy9iE

samurai - kode9 and the spaceape. this is an example of an original dubstep tune, pure weird... not for all tastes though
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaU-pnassYM

cockney thug - rusko this is just pure party dubstep.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMGkUCdF4uQ

wheres my money (Caspa remix) - tc ....an example of INSANE bass in dubstep, on a loud system this **** drives people nuts.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6lY6DnXsSM

night - benga and coki....typical dubstep anthem
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNStVlJWy88

far east assasin - goth trad...dubstep all the way from japan!!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCkB6OQmQ38

circulate - 2562, dutch producer, one of the proponents of the techno dubstep crossover style
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3roryzLLhsg

murda sound - bar 9 KILLER TUNE this slays. crazy heavy when the beat kicks back in around 0.50
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zx4G5qc_R7g

so these just represent the varying sounds within dubstep, I must stress though, this music needs to be listened on a good system or good headphones, a listen on pc speakers is a complete waste of time!!!
