NTL: Modem disconnects when copying large files across network

I'm connected to NTL via a Scientific-Atlanta EPC2203 cable modem. In front of that is a Linksys WRT56G wireless router, and to that is connected two PCs. I have the PCs connected via a local network.

If I copy a large file or no of files from one PC to the other, the modem eventually cuts out and need rebooting. I don't understand this, as the modem isn't being used in the local network, only the router. If I ping the router, it's fine, but pings to the modem are lost.

    Does anyone have any advice?

    Thanks,

    P.
