    Unless you happen to be an expert MySQL DBA (I'm most definitely not), there's not much point in me going into detail because I'm not entirely sure myself.

    Succinctly, this is a weird problem with memory and corrupt tables that might be endemic to the OS, MySQL version, or something related that has wormed its way into the gearbox. Hope it doesn't happen again, but I'm not hedging any bets yet. New DB server arrived today, so if it's purely a load issue we'll now have two very powerful machines to tackle it all. We shall see.
