The dreaded linux install thread.

    Hi folks. A mate of mine is trying to setup a linux box to run a 24hr (ish) samba server, utorrent client and apache server. Trouble is his cd drive is broken, and he doesn't have any other computer running linux. So his problems are as follows
    - a network install requires another linux box to serve the remote installer?
    - a USB key install requires a linux box to format the key in ext3?

    Is this correct, and if so, is there an easy way around it (easier then shelling out 20 bucks for a new optical drive)

    Why doesnt he just take an optical drive out of another computer for as long as he needs it..surley he can borrow one from somewhere

    You can get around this if the BIOS of the motherboard supports PXE Netboot.

    On your Windoh!s computer, you can run a so-called TFTP server program.
    It's a bit like a FTP server that hosts your Linux CD.

    Then the diskless PC can read the install disk over the network from your Windows computer.

    You only have to do this once, look for TFTP and netboot on Google
