The Tipp one is definitely a hill climbing lane, the one outside limerick is a 2+1 - there's a huge difference between the two!

is it not a hill climb lane ? it's coming up the hill at the guaig roadstone plant, the extra lane only exists on the uphill side from either direction

You clearly wernt paying attention in class yesterday..Sponge Bob linked that paper in his post #1669..

As annoying as this hold up is now... 100m out of 40km of completed motorway, once the Castletown to Nenagh section is open in Oct along with the Shannon Tunnel - this is going to be a real irritant for motorists.

roundabout at finnegans is gonna turn into a massive bottleneck

roundabout at finnegans is gonna turn into a massive bottleneck

why, there will be the same amount of traffic going through it as there is now, which is all of it.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say that the Birdhill to Limerick section will be sorted and opened before Castletown to Nenagh

    Why ?

Think of the significance of it. The M7 will most likely be the last MIU to open.
Cowen & Co are not going to want to come down to the infamous Birdhill- LImerick to declare that the MIU's are officially complete.

Castletown- Nenagh will be final piece in the MIU jigsaw to much fanfare:D

I dunno, they could come down and open the 'final section of the M7' to much fanfare. Nothing needs to be mentioned about the bog and besides, noone other than Limerick people and the people on this forum know anything about the bog. The lack of knowledge amongst the general public is staggering.

I reckon its an even bigger irritant for the contractor! If the alternative guhig / dalys cross route is used instead of the bog of doom they won't get paid for any of the bog section, I could be wrong, anyone heard any different?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Im sure that a lot of money will be held back until the bog of doom is sorted - and there must be some sort of retention as well in standard road building contracts. Presume also theres some sort of warranty or guarantee that completed roads dont sink within 12 months of opening....

Agree with earlier comment re the roundabout at Finnegans - once all city bound traffic on the motorway exit down the ramp they will be entering the roundabout a few feet away from the Q of cars from the Newport road - this is bound to affect people trying to enter from the Newport road.... although this will be easily fixed a la the tipperary road by putting traffic lights on the down ramp... as well as a few speed bumps... and possibly diverting some newport traffic to Limerick via er...Boher or somewhere...

think it was mentioned elsewhere that a link from Newport to the Birdhill interchange might have been handy!!!

I past under the motor way on Wednesday Morning about 8:30, the underpass about 500m from the mire.

There were 2 engineers(I use the term lightly) looking into a manhole and measuring something down there.

I would guess something to do with the settlement of the Bridge.

There is a lot of activity at the bog road over-pass today.

Their offices on the Newport Road outside of Birdhill are gone now replaced by a nice green field so finding out by phoning them is out.

I do not know who the Liaison officer for Limerick County Council is but Im sure you could find out.

The NRA would probably be none the wiser.

I will take a spin down that way in around 30 minutes for a "gook" but I don't expect to see anything. I was down there on Saturday and there was nothing different from what I could see.

Cheers Berty, Its frustrating stuff. I drove down from Dublin last night. When i had to turn off at Birdhill i was getting really thick. This should be priority number one for the NRA untill a solution is found.

Yes and considering the Tunnel is open on the 19th June its only going to get much worse.

Drove past myself there a few minutes ago and theres some activity - similar to what was there last week - ie smallish vehicles - nothing that could be used for new piles or whatever. There certainly doesnt seem much urgency about getting this section fixed. All the new piles that were sticking up out of the road 4 months ago are still there. They've fenced off the area in question - hopefully there's going to be more progress soon. Once the extra traffic from the tunnel is brought directly onto the bypass there's probably going to be tailbacks at the Newport road roundabout at peak times.

As far as I can tell, they seem to be strengthening the "access roads" as I call them that run alongside the motorway in the bogland area around the bog road/gooig area. Over the last few days there were trucks coming and going dumping stones on the side roads.

They are getting ready to bring in serious plant and are strengthening the ground on which it must roll in. On a plus the bog is very dry ( like the whole country) BUT The rainy season usually starts in July nowadays meaning they have better get the gear in fast.

Watch out for BIG piledrivers capable of driving a 50m pile this time...where was their pile casting site does anyone know.....and wassup there at the moment ???

I was under the impression that the old N7 from Nenagh to Birdhill was now 80km/h, was so bored from the motorway drive that I decided to drive the old road even if it was 80.

Anyway, it's 100 and it's a bit faster offpeak than the motorway, not to mention less fuel :p

  • Registered Users Posts: 265 ✭✭lukejr

I drove the bog road on Saturday, didn't walk the section but looks like there is something happening up there.

But to not that the couple of piles are still standing there, as they were months ago.

Ya i suppose the 100 km limit will stay until the bog is sorted and open fully. I travel to longford via borrisakane and use the old road i find it way quicker.

There were a number of fires on the Annaholty / Gooig bog over the last two days, anyone know if smoke interfered with the visibility on the road? Would be interesting to know if the road would have to have been closed under a "live" environment.

Surely it's safer to drive on a motorway than single carriageway when road visiblity is poor, at least you shouldn't meet oncoming traffic on your side of the road. Everyone should reduce speed and drive with care and everything should be ok.

Driving from Birdhill towards Nenagh on the N7 I've often noticed the motorway seems to be shrouded in a blanket of fog down in the valley when the N7 would be clear.
