What would have happened If America had went Isolationist after WW2? Eg if they hadnt interevened/interfered(depending on your viewpoint) in other countrys or got involved in the cold war? For instance there would have been no Vietnam. BUt how would Russia have acted? Or was Russia just painted as the bogeyman the way middle eastern countries are now?

Read "does America need a foreign policy" by Henry Kissinger. It discusses the various pros and cons of the Wilsonian and Jacksonian approaches, from WW1 onwards.
