hello, i was looking for a place in ireland to visit that is not touristy (except for irish tourists) but still vibrant and was wondering if galway would be a good choice.
i'm coming there more for the people than scenery so shooting for a place where i would be hanging out among locals. thanks a lot.

Now, the West is where you want to go for the real Irish experience. Stay away from bigger towns and go to small places in Mayo (Westport), Donegal (Malin), Kerry (The Ring, Sneem) and of course Galway (Galway, Connemara).

Must sees:
Newgrange, Meath.
Marble Arch Caves, Fermanagh.
Conor Pass, Kerry.

Ya. I lived in Donaghmede in north city Dublin for awhile. They cannot be beaten on sure rugged scenery or hospitality. Thats for sure!

As for hanging around with locals, its pretty easy to strike up a conversation with randomers in pubs/clubs...

Tourists are so friendly when their on holiday.

Irish people don't go to the pub anymore, it's too expensive. So get yourself a couple of cans and go wandering the estates looking for an open door. Sit yourself down in the sitting room and wait for the party to begin.

where do you live to say that? thing is, every time i spot some stranger as attractive, if i end up getting to know them or their last name they turn out to be at least 50% anglo or irish. this happens almost every ****ing time, i'm unbelievably accurate. and then i flew to dublin once and after a few days i could tell who's irish and who's not just by their facial features.
i'm not saying that all the original irishmen are of that physical stereotype but it is definitely a subset of irish looks and i wonder if it prevails in some areas of ireland more than others.
some famous people that are good examples are Michael Stipe and Michael J Fox.
and i've tried a dating site, all they take pictures of is their dicks...

because i wanted to know if they knew what they're talking about
if most of the people here are from galway there should be at least one who could name a few local hangout places.
but now that you mentioned, if i crash somewhere it would have to be cheaper than 15 Eu cause thats the cheapest hostel i could find.

No need to take that tone, its your own fault if you ask dumb questions. Everything happens in the pub, where else would people hang out? an empty hall? Why would anyone hold any outdoor events in the winter? Music is on in tons of different pubs, why limit yourself to one? Explore.

Actually, do you have some vision of Ireland as a completely segregated society where each ethnicity has their own pub? If you go to a pub, you will find Irish people. Simple.

Literally EVERY Irish person goes here on a Sunday night. If you see someone on a sunday night who isn't in there, they are Polish, Chinese or Nigerian.

Reading the thread again, the OP is looking for "... a place in ireland to visit that is not touristy (except for irish tourists) ". Given that Irish tourists are ok, I'd recommend Bundoran up in Co Donegal. Lovely little spot, and lots of Irish people go on holiday there, so they're kinda relaxed and looking for fun.

OP I don't know what to do with you. Brianthebeard has tried his best but I'll try and break it down one more time.

Galway is a city in Ireland. The majority of it's population is Irish born and bred despite a recent increase in immigration. This means the majority of the male population will be Irish. A lot of the hanging out in Ireland is done in pubs and house parties - this is where you will find people.

As for any particular pub I couldn't comment - there are probably 50 pubs in the city centre which satisfy different tastes and demographics: students, scumbags, professionals, old people, hippies

So come along if you want and test the pubs and find one you like and start there.

If you can't do that then shag off
