Ok guys after a week of choping and changing i think this is the build that i would be very happy with.

This is not spending money for the sake of it, im building this very much with future proofing in mind and only build about every 3yrs or so. I haven't shopped around for better prices yet but €1600 is the total with Komplett but reckon with a change here and there and a little shopping about i could get it down to about €1400 which is still a lot of money but i will be building over the next two months so as to spread the cost out a little.

For this kinda money i really really want to get this right so please advise if you think i need to change. Also i will be installing a 64bit OS, more than likley XP.

If you could save some moneys from motherboard for extra 2 gigs of ram, it would be grand i suppose ;)

Dam hard to skimp on the mainboard right now given the i7 and DDR3, might save 20 bills or so at most but i like this board,

the equivalent Asus or MSI are very good options also but its been a while(amd 754) since i had a Gigabyte mobo and there a cracking board.

My advise is to dump that new board, ram and cpu, save yourself a small fortune. Solely from a gaming performance perspective, the slowest very original Core 2 CPU's (6300@1.86Ghz) are still able to eat up the latest games when overclocked by a few 100 mhz...assuming you're a gamer by the 4870.

    Intel Core™ i7 Quad Processor i7-920 4,8GT/sec, 8MB, Boxed (289.00)
    Crucial DDR3 BallistiX 2000MHz 2GB,KIT w/two1GB's, CL9-9-9-28 (E.P.P.2) (259.00)
    Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5,X58, DDR3, Socket-1366, ATX, 3xPCI-Ex (2.0)x16 (309.00)

Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 Exclusive Dual Fan CPU Cooler,LGA1366 only (73.00)

That's the guts of 920 quid just on board ,cpu and ram - and speaking of which, 2gb is very little for a brand new machine to boot.

I'd go for either an E8500 if you're just gaming, or maybe something like the Q9300 if your a frequent multi-tasker.

Choosing the newest and most expensive just because you feel it'll last longer is always a terrible move. You'll need to change the video card far faster then you would the E8500/Q9300 to be honest. 80 quid tops will get you high quality 4gb of ram, 100-200 depending on your preferences will get you a rock solid board - and the difference in saving will get you a 4870X2. Personally I'm a gamer with a large monitor and I also overclock; I use a 55 euro motherboard and it's fine. People are too quick to automatically assume newer, bigger, more expensive = better and somehow more future proofed. It's not. By the time 3 years rolls around, if you strive to maintain on top of the latest games, you'll have changed the video card several times, the cpu, once at most, possibly not even. Anyone with an old core 2 from 2-2.5 years ago will tell you with a small overclock even the slowest stock cpu can tear through the latest games, whereas that same person has probably changed video card several times.

Hands down, a machine with an E8500, 4gb ram, 4870X2 would pound your intended build into the dust both now and for the foreseeable future, and cost the same if not less to boot.

    What he said

Seriously, a Q6600 is under €150 these days, even stretching to a Q6700 would give a nice 3.2Ghz overclock with little effort and the right components

I wouldnt touch the HD4870x2, its just not worth €450.Sli and Crossfire are still along way from being worth while and I was disappointed with the 4870x2.

I said I would never go dual graphics again after the 8800gtx sli setup I had, I then foolishly went and got a 9800gx2, as a nice fella on this forum got me a cheap one from the states and it was horribile. The 4870x2 had much the same problems as that, jumpy frame rates, no improvement in some games, infact some games played even worse than a single 8800gtx

If you play a large amount of games, dual gpu will stress the **** out of you.I spent more time messing with drivers, then I did playing the games at times.

Terror's advice as usual is spot on.If you want to get the best possibile gaming experience for money spent, then do as he says.

You overclock so you dont have to spent much :D

    €60 P35 mobo
E5200 2.5ghz ( overclocks well past 3.00ghz and possibily the greatest cpu I have ever used for the price )
    4870HD

Overclock that to 3.50ghz and your set for a good while, sell it on in a year or 2 for €300 and get another €700 pc, that will kill the one you were going to get for €1400.

Why are you paying so much for an out of date mobo?

2gig of any ram for €130 is crazy, unless its for a new platform

Honestly your better off spending an extra €200 an go Core i7 or else get Q9550, pc 8500, P35
