AGGGHHHH THE DREADED GLOCKS ARE COMING FOR US ALL!!!!

Where does he get off by saying Gardai are "required" to liscense firearms?? There is no requirement on any superintendant to liscense any firearm to any person if he has good reason and grounds to belive that the person is a danger to themselves or the general public!!
The way this carry on is going on in the media over handguns is now getting ridicilous.Would there be such a hue and cry if this shooting was done with a sawn off shotgun???Doubtful. It seems that there is now in my mind definately some push on by our betters to remove handguns from Ireland.

"If you want to keep someone away from your house, Just fire the shotgun through the door."

It's on the main RTE news website also - here's the text:

Concern at licensing of hand guns

    Thursday, 13 November 2008 16:13
The Garda Commissioner has said he is concerned about the number of firearms, in particular handguns, that gardaí are required to licence because of recent court judgments.
Facthna Murphy said he had no power to issue guidelines to superintendents on the issue.
Mr Murphy said the problem was that while some gardaí were licensing dangerous weapons such as Glock pistols, other gardaí were seeking to take these weapons out of the hands of criminals.

I was tempted to email Paul Williams (paul.williams@sundayworld.com) to ask him why the manufacturer of pistols used in crime is so relevant. And its always Glock SEMIAUTOMATIC. All the uninformed hear is automatic. You never hear a news story that would say "a Benelli sawed-off shotgun was used in the robbery". What point is he trying to make exactly ?

Can they tell from the bullet fired what type pistol i.e. manufacturer was used or do Glock handguns have an obvious differences to others ?

Among a few others, Glock use polygonal rifling (as do H&K ;)), so bullets fired through such a barrel are more readily attributed to a particular manufacturer than those fired through conventionally rifled barrels.

Not that it matters in this context, a bullet with polygonal rifling marks on it is no more eeeeevil than any other.

See the other thread on questions and answers. The IT today has a short report on that section of the Commissioners submission to the PAC which almost completely changes the emphasis and meaning of the RTE report.
With the Department of Justice, he was reviewing legislation on the licensing of handguns; this follows the disclosure of figures showing that 1,800 handguns have been licensed in recent years, with large variations in the numbers licensed in different regions.

He said existing legislation was being examined to see whether it gave the commissioner authority to issue guidelines to regional superintendents with responsibility for gun licences. On the one hand gardaí were licensing Glock pistols, while other gardaí were seizing these guns from criminals.

Some 860 firearms were seized last year, he pointed out, and some of these were licensed guns which were stolen. Criminals were driving around looking for houses with gundogs and then robbing them in the knowledge that guns were inside.

They are crediting the criminals with great intelligence in that they seem to be able to differentiate between ordinary household dogs/pets and gundogs!

    sensationalist dribble!!

I would imagine they are also on shakey legal ground in singling out Glock as a manufacturer

Its also a bit idiotic to try and bring licensed firearms into the equation for the sole purpose of detracting from the fact that the gardai are not doing their job to ensure illegal weapons are not getting into the hands of criminals by what ever means.

Handguns and high powered rifles were originally banned to stop them falling into the hands of the para militaries, it didnt come close to impacting on there ability to acquire weapons nor will a new ban or tightening of legislations stop criminals getting their hands on Evil Glocks(blesses himself) etc from other sources.
