I shop in Lidl on Pottery Road near Bakers corner (kind of deansgrange/ rochestown avenue area)and I've seen Irish Times journalists and RTE presenters doing their shopping there and plenty of new mercedes in the car park. They've a good range of organic produce. I try to only buy organic and no processed food. Make everything myself from scratch. Works out very economically. A few years ago I was living with two Kiwi girls in Dublin and we used to pool our money to buy groceries. €30 each for the week covered everything and we ate like kings - lamb shanks, roast veg, home made sushi. We could get two meals out of one chicken - cut off the legs and breasts for fried/baked chicken and then chicken noodle soup out of the carcass. Or could combine one of the chicken breasts with "bacon misshapes" in a creamy homemade parsley sauce topped with pastry and baked in the oven for a massive homemade pie that would do for dinner and lunch the next day. Right i'm seriously going off topic. Have food on my mind. Drool.....I'm just saying there are ways to stretch the pounds that our grannies would have been adept at that we might have lost. Sure they had more time, but if you enjoy cooking and being creative, it can be done. I wish the likes of Conor Pope in the Irish Times, when he's writing reviews of food products would add a recipe so you could make it yourself and say how much it would cost. Right i've got to go do some work ......urg!!
