A big downgrade from the 00z, it looks as the cold air will miss us completly, dam that high

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,033 ✭✭✭Snowbie

I feel this is still going to happen +12hrs out, The GFS 06Z has it upgraded slightly again but just for the east and on Saturday then Atlantic air rolls in later followed by a reload of cold for Sunday and Monday.

Any updates on whether this will affect us or not?

Any updates on whether this will affect us or not?

FRIDAY will start cloudy and still reasonably mild with some rain or drizzle. Brighter and noticeably cooler, fresher weather with scattered showers will become established as the day progresses. Temperatures initially up to 10 or 11 degrees will drop back into singles figures as a strong northerly wind develops throughout the afternoon and evening. A few showers on SATURDAY, but a lot of dry weather overall. Winds will be moderate to fresh northwest backing west. A spell of rain will follow on Saturday night and it will become fairly windy. SUNDAY looks like being a cool windy day with sunshine and showers.

next wednesday looks to be a good day for snow:(

There seems to be another shot of a northerly about T144 - T126 out, something too keep an eye on

18Z has 850mb air on Saturday at -6C in Dublin while -11C in Liverpool otherwise not much change to last 18Z rollouts. Likely now the HP will ruin win out this time and keep the real cold air out east.

The next few runs will be interesting.
We should have clearer picture by tomorrow/Saturday.

Awesome charts, at this time of year things could really deliver with charts like that..
Long way to go until Monday though.

How come our met service are not talking about the cold. Gerard fleming was even playing down the fact that it was not going to happen, last night after the nine news. Seems to me there is some sort of bias against cold weather to early on in the season, if it was mild it would be all over the news at how global warming was giving us " milder winters" .......

It shows temperatures where the air pressure is 500hPa, which is roughly 5500 metres above sea level..so the temperatures up that high are going to be a lot cooler than down here.

Shot 1 of cold looks like only affecting England.

Shot 2 of cold looks like it could bring some wintry showers to Ireland and it will be bitterly cold in a NNE wind.

Shot 3 of cold towards late next week...........wellllll It could be EPIC..

    Stay tuned folks:pac::D

I have not got a chance to view the charts as of yet, but if this is what is coming then it is really exciting for the developments of proper wintry weather. A build up like this will give the cold a great chance to pool to the east and over N Europe - dig in so to speak. Any N, E or even SE winds feeding off this developed pool will certainly deliver. It looks like December, that is being touted around the place, is possibly a contender for serious winter weather.

As far as next Monday is concerned, this is what Met Eireann is saying in their outlook:

It'll stay cold on Monday too, but mostly dry.

Meanwhile, the lads in the UK are saying the following
Little change for Saturday, cold with wintry showers in the north and east. Wet for a time Sunday, with sleet & snow in places. Sunny spells and showers [rain] on Monday.

They have a severe weather warning from Scotland tomorrow and the East coast of the UK for Saturday warning of Snow Showers and blizzard conditions. Theres nothing showing for Monday though. :(

The third looks intense....the charts remind me of late December 2000 when most of Ireland got battered by intense snow showers:D

12z  T168-T324 in 528dam air or less.

    Week long snow fest--yum (hopefully)

I remember that very well, in late Dec 2000 we had snow for hours nonstop and after it settled for about 5 days, the best snow experience of my life so far, how id love to see that again.
maybe i will if the charts stay the same

  • Registered Users Posts: 16,851 ✭✭✭✭nacho libre

ah yes late december 2000... i have fond of memories of that time too. there was six inches of lying snow by the time it had finished:D

So, is this looking like a snow event then? For the whole country?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,913 ✭✭✭Danno

Looking at the 18z and it is quite the jem. As always, further model outputs are required. But, at face value, the ingredients are there for some wintry spells. The dew points look like they'll play ball too - this is the most vital component IMHO.

The forecasted model outputs would be leaning towards a snow event for all living 30 or 40 miles inland of the west coastline from Galway south. Higher altitudes in West Munster will suffice.

Does this mean no snow for Dublin?
