Ok, just ordered this from Ebuyer. Been on the lookout for a laptop for a while so hopefully this fits the bill!

Ebuyer.com is shocking though for registering. I had to add a digit to my mobile number to pass validation, then it required a post code to auto complete my UK address with no option to change the country. I rang up and they told me to enter REP123 as the post code and when it wasn't recognised I was then able to enter my address but still the country was uneditable. When I put in my full address, including Ireland, it recognised on the next page that it was for a different country.

Some bad reviews online about their delivery. Expecting this on Monday but we'll see.

    Thanks for the tip!

    ok guys,

just ordered one of these myself, i had to call them up so i could register on their site, their web site is a bit finneky about your telephone number, it will only accept a number that is 11 digits long, just in case any of you get stck at that section.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,083 ✭✭✭carbsy

Ordered one for a friend also. Thanks OP.A bit of a nightmare trying to register/push the sale through though as site is clearly geared for UK market.

my order also got rejected because i tried to get it delivered to a business address and payed with a visa card registered to my home address, had to call them again for them to tell me that, for my 1st order it has to be delivered to the same address as the card,

I got around that by paying through google checkout.

    Good specs for the price.

The only thing putting me off ordering is that the CPU is a bit weak.

Yes, you have to pay with Google Checkout.

It seems to install Vista and the applications from a partition on the hard drive when you first turn it on, so it takes a bit of time to set up initially.

Another person frustrated with the rubbish site for registering and paying. Paid through Google Checkout. Google said Ebuyer cancelled the order, Ebuyer said Google cancelled the order as the credit card didn't pass fraudulent checks. I have to try again. Chances are it'll be cancelled again and I won't find out until I get home from work tomorrow.

Just got this same problem today! I rang them up and they blame Google and on the Google checkout it says it was cancelled by eBuyer... They told me to buy and pay direct from them but when I try register they only allow UK addresses. Anyone know a way around this? I might just try calling their direct sales line...

anyone think this thread should be pointed out to ebuyer.com to highlight the difficulties that non-uk customers are having regarding the checkout area of their site ????

considering that we are getting better value to the sterling, it really would be in their interests to start looking at being also geared to the irish market and not making it so damn difficult to checkout.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 422 ✭✭Nonmonotonic

With the Euro - Pound parity it would be great if it were easier to use the eBuyer site from Ireland. I am currently attempting the impossible also i.e buying a laptop from them. I've got past the 11 digit phone issue, past the rep123 issue and then a issue arose regarding my name. Seems if you are an O' something the site has a brain fart! Its only a problem when you pay by credit card and you have to put the name on the card down. Solution is to type O\' (I thought my surname looked strange before!). I have placed the order and am waiting for cancellation notice! I will persist ( failing in my character ) but it would put a lot of people off. Its a shame because there is some good stuff here.

I am trying to buy some stuff from them also and I am facing the same problems. I called them and they said their system will only accept UK cards with UK addresses for the first purchase. The guy said I could try, but the system would eventually cancel the transaction. I tried Google Checkout and Paypal, but it just times out before getting to the confirmation page.
I was giving up until I saw one of the posters here managed to buy with Google Checkout (Carbsy), so I will give it another go.
I agree with the suggestion that we should bring this to ebuyers attention so they can see they might be loosing significant business.
My only fear is that they might be looking at setting up a euro based site so they can join the rip-off club and screw it up for all including themselves.

I've used ebuyer a few times since the beginning of the year and have always paid by google checkout without an problems. I'm wondering if people having problems with google checkout are making their first purchase with google checkout?

The other thing to watch out for with ebuyer is that they always give me the wrong tracking number. Citylink give Irish parcels a number beginning with KAX but I always get something different from ebuyer. I end up ringing Nightline (who are used by Citylink) to find out when the parcel will arrive.

Having said all that I'll keep using them because the prices are great.

Just bought 2 of these using google checkout and had no problems at all. It was my first time using both ebuyer and google checkout and i have to say it was the quickest and easiest purchase i have ever made on the net primarely due to google checkout.

It was very easy to use and very quick. Tried to buy it using my visa card but was a nightmare entering my information on ebuyer. I registered with google checkout, selected what i wanted on the ebuyer website, proceeded to checkout and then clicked on the google checkout icon which automatically brought up all my information with my correct irish address.

Got them both with friday delivery for 795 pounds. Happy days :)

Yes, eBuyers online ordering is a pile of poo for RoI users however it is probably worthwhile to persist.

Following my last post, I too ran into the dreaded UK Credit Card only as I feared. The solution , as mentioned by butts, is to use Google Checkout. Go here (create Google account) and use this account instead of a credit card when you go to pay for the basket contents ( google trolly icon ).

The info on the tracking code is also useful. eBuyer seem to give the wrong ship code for some reason. To track your purchase put in your eBuyer order number in the customer ref. box here .

They will never break our spirit!:)

This seems to be the same laptop with a slightly better CPU and for £10 less....
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/152233

This seems to be the best deal around at the moment. Saw one in Tesco a couple of days ago for 499 euro but it only had 1GB ram and 120GB hard drive.
It also beats any deal going in Dell Outlet (as of this post).

Seems a lot of guys here had a problem with ebuyer.com .... as did I.

The simplest way to get around problems is NOT to register with ebuyer. This avoids the problem of postcode (REP123/EIRE) and the problem with the phone number.
First of all register with google checkout and afterwards confirm the account.
Then go to ebuyer, select the laptop, go to checkout and purchase using google checkout. Simple as that. The phone number will be passed on via google checkout to ebuyer and then onto the courier (normally Nightline or Target Express).
It's a waste of time phoning ebuyer as they can't do anything (see previous posts) and all they can give you is tracking numbers etc which you can then use on the Irish courier website to see when the goods will arrive. The tracking/order numbers you see on ebuyer site are not the ones which you can use to track on the Irish site.

So to put it simply, register with google checkout (make sure your local mobile number is correct), confirm registration, order on ebuyer.com, go straight to checkout without registering and pay using google checkout.
As soon as you see it's been despatched, just put the feet up for two or three 'business days' and hey presto!

where is the best place to buy real cheap laptops, is this £399 the cheapest around. i want something for 200 euro or less.. pure basic nothing special at all. must be new

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,026 ✭✭✭Amalgam

Just a warning. Having bought a similar HP laptop. Most of the newer models do not have official HP Windows XP driver support. It came as a shock when the first thing I wanted to do was wipe Vista and start with XP.

You can kludge a few drivers for graphics but there's some very annoying problems with getting the audio to work 'normally' with XP. A few bugs associated with the media and wifi switches also.

Just a heads up if you're not a fan of Vista and plan to 'downgrade' to XP..

best bet then is a netbook, but you'll struggle to find one that wasn't preowned for under €200. something like the eeePC or the Acer Aspire. in and around the 250 mark.

Order this yesterday but Ebuyer have cancelled the order today because they say the item is no longer available or have been discontinued yet their website say there are 98 in stock!

Update: I used google checkout for purchasing and when it was cancelled it said it was cancelled by Ebuyer. Yet when I rang them they said it was cancelled by google checkout!! Anyone have problems like this before?

  • Registered Users Posts: 91 ✭✭joeswatch

    I've had this problem twice.
As I said in my previous post, don't register with ebuyer.com, just setup the account with google checkout ..... and all that data will be automatically stored with ebuyer when you've passed the checkout and paid. If you don't confirm your account with google checkout first (before purchasing), ebuyer will cancel it because google checkout won't honour it.
On my third attempt it worked. What happened on my second attempt I've no idea, maybe I attempted the same purchase before the first one was officially cancelled. My third attempt was a day or two after, allowing time for cancellation.
It's a waste of time phoning ebuyer.com. If you've any problems just post up here and I'll help in any way I can.

Thanks joeswatch. I ordered it again so we'll see what will happen. I emailed both google and ebuyer but they didn't get back to me yet. I never got any email to verify google checkout (already had a gmail account tho) but it looks like it is verified (according to the help in google)

You should have received an e-mail from accounts-noreply@google.com
    with the following content.

Welcome to Google Accounts. To activate your account and verify your e-mail
address, please click on the following link: etc, etc, etc.

If you didn't get this then check the e-mail address you used in 'google checkout'. If you didn't get this e-mail and failed to click on the link within the e-mail then you didn't register so naturally enough your 'google checkout' won't work.
