Puh. The only intelligent comedy I am aware of is stuff that is written by Kevin Smith, excluding Jay and Silent Bob Strike back.

Yeah, cos Jersey Girl was a work of epic genius!
Back in your box, pal! :P

I have not seen Jersey Girl actually. Completely forgot about in fact.

Watched a show which had all of Kevin Smith, Jason Lee, Scott Mosier, Ethan Suplee and Jason Mewes the other day - Drawing Flies. AFAIK not written by any of the above. Utter garbage anyway. Had its moments but overall poor.

Kevin Smith? a better comedian than a director, Clerks is completely overrated, actors who cant act sounding like they're just reading lines off cuecards, Smiths best movie is Zack and Miri Make A Porno, by a long country mile

Watch your opinion of Smith change drastically. It was piss poor.
Trust me, Kevin Smith is great stand up, but intelligent? Nah, All the View Askewniverse movies are all pretty much same sh*t, different day.

That aint intelligent where I come from, that's repetitive.

Jesus, not seen the latter either, so my original statement is beginning to look ill informed to say the least :p

Re Clerks, cannot disagree with you more. I think the dialogue rolls fantastically, and is a genuinely funny show. And I think the acting suits the movie. They do a good job of what they need to do.

I think Smith is a great talker/comedian, his stuff about Batman and Prince on the first An Evening With.. dvd is hilarious, he wrote one of the best runs of Daredevil the comic and he can be brilliantly funny in his scriptwriting at times, but he does crank out a lot of **** as well, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was awful ditto Jersey Girl and Clerks 2, but Chasing Amy and Zack and Miri are both brilliant. Dogma has its moments, Mallrats is awful but thats mostly because of my hatred for Jason Lee, surely one of the most unlikeable main characters in a movie ever

Smith came up with Jay and Silent Bob. the mans a genius.

Clerks and Dogma are great. After that it depends on personal taste

Clerks is a great film but don't watch the sequel.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,599 ✭✭✭✭ShawnRaven

I enjoyed the sequel to be honest wasn't as good as the original but it wasn't anywhere near as bad as some of the stuff Smith has been involved with.

I thought the sequal was entertaining as well but it's not a patch on the original. Style over substance

smith IS silent bob! the mans a genius!

although some would say if a director makes an incredibly funny man totally mute throughout a number of movies he's not really a genius! oh the irony! :pac:

Smith is really good imo and id say he knew while Jay and Silent Bob was being made that it wouldent be great but he was having fun and making money with his friends. I do believe though he wants to prove he is more than the guy who makes "Kevin Smith movies" like Dogma, Mallrats and clerks etc.. and when he leaves his confort zone he is prone to error. Clerks is a classic imo, it proves you dont need money to make a good movie and Clerks two i really enjoyed but dont regard in the same high standard as its predecessor.

Clerks is aweomse. Just a really clever little film. Clerks 2, much like Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, is one of those movies where you can sit back and enjoy the stupidness. A perfect movie to watch with some friends and enjoy a few drinks while doing so.

For me, the best thing Kevin Smith ever made was Dogma. An amazing film from start to finish. Witty, intelligent and an orignal plot. Amazing perfomances too from Alan Rickman and Ben Affleck (possibly the only time I'll say that about Affleck).

I recently watched Chasing Amy for the first time in about five years. It's a good film, though nothing amazing. Not nearly as good as when I seen it on TV originally. I think Mallrats also falls into the same category. Good movie to pass the time with. Again, nothing special. Can't comment on Jersey Girl as I've not seen it. Though I've heard that it's complete sh*t from many a person.

I recently saw Zack & Mirri Make A Porno. I thought it was quite good and goes to show that there's life in Kevin Smith yet. Speaking of which, Seth Rogen. I've seen a few films with him in it and they've all been pretty decent. I think he's a funny guy but he doesn't really act, does he? He plays essentially the same character in his movies.

Anyway, just my two cents. Just got in from work and I'm winding down before sleepy time:o

that character he plays is called Seth Rogan, i like him but as you say he is very much the same always.

Ive always wonderd why isnt there a sign language channel with people just signing over good shows instead of it only being on late at night. not that id watch it but im sure the people the late stuff is aimedd at would prefer to be able to watch it at a normal hour.

Just wanna say, for the first time in my life, earlier this evening, I got my assignment handed back to me with a big fat A written across it. :)

    I'm happy anyway. :D
(and no, for all you smartasses out there, the A did not stand for Asshole, Arrogant_Prick, Antagonist, Antichrist or any derogatory statements as such) :)

    Fair dues, what in?

Doing my teaching diploma in IT at the minute. 10 years of being a technician means my clock has been ticking in that area for the last two years or so, but i love IT too much to leave it. It's given me a good life, a roof over my head and everything i could pretty much want, in a material sense.

So if i can turn my talent to teaching and give something back. While at the same time giving myself more options, and not be a forty-something technician ten years from now (not that there's anything wrong with that, i just don't see myself there), then i'll be able to concentrate on a retirement plan.

(I know that sounds like real old mans talk, but to be honest, that's the sort of thing that has to be started off early, and i'm miles late! :D )

The first have of Clerks 2 was very very funny. The Lord Of The Rings part, the crippy boy argument which lef to the ongoing Anne Frank references, pillowpants, ATM were all very funny. Once the love story took over, it pretty much fell apart.

And if you think times are hard now? Don't turn on the TV, radio or look at a newspaper today, Cowen's second mini budget in six months is to be announced.

Taking this from the WM thread so as not to take it completely off topic, but there will be nothing "mini" about it. I am expecting 2% to be added to the income levy, about 50cents on a box of fags and 10cents on a pint. It is also reckoned about 10 cents to a litre of petrol.

Not to mentyion that there will be another "normal" budget in december where we can expect the same to happen again. All a load of bollocks if you ask me.

    Appreciated.

Well I don't smoke, and i suffered enough smokers second hand smoke in pubs before the ban five years ago, guess who's having the last laugh on that one?

As regards alcohol. The price of that stuff has gone up and up. Oddly enough, the statistics of teenage of binge drinking have done too. Seeing a disturbing pattern there?

As for petrol, again, anyone mad enough to WANT to own a car in Ireland after the state Brennan left the transport system before he stepped down a couple of years ago, deserves to get completely f*cked over in my honest opinion.

Hey don't blame me, i didn't vote in Fianna Failure. Did you? :P
