Puh, that is completely deliberate looking for a rise from people, and most of the posters there know that as well.

And unfortunately the reason I take it seriosuly is that the club I have supported since 1988 is on the brink of collapse. From a persoanl point of view, I would find that devastating.

Best stadium in the league...... for a few years anyway!

I guess watching 20-30 tournaments a year makes me a bandwagon jumper eh? :P Nah I know what ya mean tbh, even when I did have an interest in snooker, for example, I always thought it daft the attention it got around world championship time.

Also, just wait for the British Open to see OTT coverage of golf on the BBC :P

Same as any sport really, any big event gets bandwagon jumpers, the world cup, heineken cup, masters, wimbledon etc the Olympics gets on my tits, a whole summer of crap tv as we have to watch people running, running ffs thats not a sport!

    Aye, sure anyone can run.
In fairness the Olympics are only a couple of weeks every 4 years. I enjoy tennis and the Masters Series or whatever it's called is brilliant with the top 8 or so players. Wimbledon grinds my gears too. Especially when it ****ing rains. World cup is annoying because it takes over RTÉ. Don't mind the Heineken cup too much since I follow Rugby anyway, though as with any sport the coverage is way OTT when an irish team does well.

Why, oh why oh why dont they just build a ****ing retractable roof over that place? every bloody year you flick around and its people with umbrellas watching the poor sods legging it across the court with a big tarp once theres a bit of drizzle, tennis would be way more interesting on a slippery surface anyway, its basically human Pong

Like the world cup is a human version of Pro Evo yeah? :P I think the roof might actually be finished for this year. At least this way they might be showing live stuff most of the time. Nothing worse than when it's on BBC 1 and 2 and it's both matches from the 70s. And yes I mean nothing, not even cancer.

    Anyone here watch Minder?

It's an old TV show, but i've only started watching it recently. I came across it by accident really, despite hearing good things about it in the past. Must say though, i'm finding it to be an amazingly good TV show. Some hilarious stuff in it.

Another one of those old programmes I'd love to catch. Where does it be on? Unfortunately I have to squeeze sports into the limited TV time I get. :P

Well i've got the DVDs at the moment. Not that expensive off eBay.

It's a pain in the ass though, cos i want them on my hard drive, but can;t seem to find a decent DVD ripper at all. They all either lose quality or don't do th efull episodes (get near the end and then they report some problem that means it was all just a waste of time).

Season 5 is available for download on 'some sites' online if you look around.

You know the way there are sites like pirate bay and warez, etc. etc.? Are there any sites like that, where you can actually buy a DVD (Minder, for example) and instead of just sending you a DVD, they give you (legal) download links for the show?

You're not using the right tools, my friend.
Source a copy of Clone DVD Mobile and AnyDVD. Install both, restart your system and choose the format you want to rip your DVD to. Should suffice. I did it for all my WWE DVDs when i wanted to put them over to my Archos and it worked a treat. :)

Cheers Raven. I shall take a look into both of them and see if i can sort something out. Was using a program i downloaded called "Magic DVD Ripper" or something like that. Worked perfectly for two episodes of Minder, and then it curled up and died. Wouldn't rip full episodes and kept reporting bugs. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling a few times to no avail.

Just don't want to have to bring DVDs around with me, or have them gathering dust anymore. I've got a 1TB hard drive that's got a few hundred GB of space left on it, so i'm gonna start trying to get all my DVDs onto that. Why there isn't an iTunes style online store for films and TV shows yet is beyond me. It seems to be the next step for DVDs. They'll have to be done away with sooner or later.

It's crazy when you think about it. People complain about so many people being unemployed and what not. But when you think of it realistically, the population of the world is going to continue to keep growing, but there's going to be more and more machines doing the jobs that we "should" be doing. The only jobs that will exist in a few decades will be jobs fixing computers or entertainment jobs (acting, etc.).

I wonder what odds i'd get if i went into Boylesports or one of those showers, and made a bet that in 15 years video-rental places won't exist in any shape or form physically. There'll be no such thing as going to rent out or buy a DVD/Game/CD in a physical shop and it will all be done online. Xtra-Vision, BlockBuster, and Co. will all go under...?

CloneDVD mobile is what you'll mainly use, but you may require AnyDVD to get around the protection some of the DVDs will throw up.

DVDs will be done away with, but in favour for Blu-Rays. There's no way they're going to simply introduce downloading of copyrighted material for video, as that industry is crippled as it is. You can try digital rights management for video stuff, but it's too easily bypassed like it is with audio.

Or teaching. I've been in IT for 10 years now, sadly every Tom, Dick and Harry got in on that boat so there's several people claiming to be IT guys with one years experience that can be employed for peanuts, because nobody is willing to fork out a lot for someone who actually knows their sh*t. Not anytime soon anyway. Which is why i'm getting into the teaching/training end of it. Because someone has to groom the next generation of "fixers", might as well be me. ;)

You'll lose miserably. Not everything will go online, this time five years ago people were saying similar, that there'll be no such thing as physical currency. But the fact of the matter is, you're complaining about boredom during this 4 day weekend, right? Could you imagine how more bored you would be if you didn't have to leave the house for anything?

You'd most likely off yourself within a week.

I'm not going ot get into a full on speculative debate about the future, as i'm going to bed in a minute. But if The Jetsons is anything to go by, then I don't mind the future we're set to have :)

As for Blu-Rays, i really don't see them going as high as people think they will. Too many people are internet-savvy as it is, and I don't know many people who even buy Blu-Ray as it is. Don't get me wrong, I'm not arguing that the quality found on a Blu-Ray disc isn't better than a traditional DVD. Of course it is, but I just don't see it getting as big as DVD did. Look at the XBox LIVE marketplace for example; they offer DVDs for download and games, too. They have lots of games that are difficult to get and find these days in their 'arcade' too.

I really think it's just a case that people will start to become more knowledgeable regarding the internet and so forth, and will start turning to hard drives and downloadable media rather than physical goods.

I play a game of cards in my brother's house every few weeks when im in the mood. There are usually 8 players at a time, but about 12 people play in total, depending on who can and can't make it on the night. Six months ago, they all bought DVDs and one of two of them splashed out into the blu-ray market. Last time i was there (last week) one of the guys had gotten a decent internet connection and had been downloadning films for some of the other guys, etc... Now seven of them don't buy DVDs or anything, and instead use a memory stick and just plug it into the front of their 360s.

All of these guys are kitchen fitters/cabinet makers/etc. so the recession business has hit them pretty hard and they no longer want to spend money on DVDs at the weekend.

In my own personal opinion, i reckon this kinda attitude will catch on and soon a lot more people will be doing it. Then of course, "they" will try to crack down on it and it'll become tougher to download films. But as it is at the moment, it's incredibly easy to download a film or two. It just requires a bit of common sense and time to get it right the first time or two.

Raven, you say you've been involved with I.T for ten years. So with that in mind, im going ot assume you have a good grasp on how the net works, and are fully capable of downloading a film.

Say you're in the mood of seeing, i dunno, we'll say Kung Fu Panda. Even if you are going to go out and buy it in the store, surely part of you must be tempted to just download it instead?

The problem with movies being downloaded from Live is that they can't be transferred to another xbox (to my knowledges, although that is limited), it makes rental impossible too. Games are a different story altogether so i ain't touching that with a barge pole. Blu-Ray can be played anywhere in their respective regions, and are rapidly falling in price. Also bear in mind that the storage capability is 4-8 times the amount of DVD, which makes for bucketloads of extras. :D
I really think it's just a case that people will start to become more knowledgeable regarding the internet and so forth, and will start turning to hard drives and downloadable media rather than physical goods.

You think so? You'd be surprised the amount of households that have a PC/Laptop and their users are using it to browse web pages and that's about it. People could become more knowledgeable, but they don't. They stick with convenience.

Personally, i can't stand movie downloads, I notice a huge difference in video quality. Of course, i do video work as a side project too. But there's a motion lag in Divx/Xvid movies that aren't really noticable on PC's during playback, but through a TV be it from an xbox, PS3 or even a DVD player with a USB slot on it, it's noticable and really annoying. Back when i traded DVDs i blacklisted several people for converting downloads to DVD and try to pass it off as the genuine article because it looked so crap, especially on bigger screens.
All of these guys are kitchen fitters/cabinet makers/etc. so the recession business has hit them pretty hard and they no longer want to spend money on DVDs at the weekend.

I don't buy that at all, i'll place a safe bet that DVD sales won't take that much of a hit. Video sales skyrocketed actually between 89-94, and we were financially a lot worse off then!

Problem is there are several places in Ireland that haven't moved out of dialup, and as i said earlier, people who aren't tech savvy will sooner go for convenience every time.
Raven, you say you've been involved with I.T for ten years. So with that in mind, im going ot assume you have a good grasp on how the net works, and are fully capable of downloading a film.

To suggest otherwise would be an insult. ;)
Say you're in the mood of seeing, i dunno, we'll say Kung Fu Panda. Even if you are going to go out and buy it in the store, surely part of you must be tempted to just download it instead?

Actually no, much as i embrace technology, i also embrace in the philosophy that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. What we may see as the future could result in a massive flop. Several example of this have been the Betamax video, The Minidisc (not once, but twice), the UMD movie, HD-DVD and Laserdisc. :)

For the purposes of this discussion, for as long as Hollywood gives a physical format it's backing, it's the way forward. As it's the studios who determine, and not the masses, because the masses will always follow as long as they're told.

And if you don't believe me, take one big look at our economy. The country can bitch all they want, but they're going to take it up the ass anyway and do nothing about it, because that's about all we're used to, and all we're useful for.

You may not like hearing it, but it's the gods honest truth. :)

You make some very good points, SR. Maybe you're right about it all, though. Can't predict the future. I do see a bleak future for stores like HMV and the likes though. Although maybe it's just me.

HMV will still be around, they'll just be forced into dropping their prices considerably over time, but they'll still be around. Besides, they're financially set if they were able to buy out half of the Zavvi stores that went under a few months ago.

cant remember what id wanted to mention yesterday :D but it might have been about Eastbound and down, saw the 1st season yesterday and its F'N hilarious, its like a TV series about one of Will Ferells typical sports movie characters. Farell actually makes cameos in atleast 2 eps.
