Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I see that one of the most despised brands in the country has been confirmed as wriggling out of title sponsorship for the league, with the FAI having no replacement.

Reflects very poorly on all concerned in our 'sports-mad' country*.

*Includes only marketable demographics, and certainly not non-prawn-sandwich eating males under 30.

in fairness what company can justify spending a couple of million a year sponsoring the league in the current economic climate? it'd go down pretty badly if some company came out and said yeah we'll sponsor the league for 5 years at say 2 million a year and then a couple of weeks later lay off a few hundred workers....

besides the 'eircom' league isn't exactly an attractive sponsorship it doesnt have the exposure level - how many people actually go to/watch on tv the 'eircom' league?

    well that's my two cents

only way I could see anyone signing up to sponsorship is if its a one year rolling contract which is hard to see - would start getting too messy having to sit down ever year to discuss

They, quite simply, should never have let eircom wriggle out of the deal.

It just goes to show what contempt the FAI actually hold the LoI in.

And people wonder why LoI fans hate the FAI and it's head man?

He's tried to bury this fiasco with his little hilarity about getting England over.

    And you know what?

    People actually fell for it.

Seeing as we need a league to field an international team, the rats can sponsor both or fcuk off. We're not talking about a massive amount (lol @ 2 million :)), given the exposure they get.

Pity they don't withdraw sponsorship from the national team also and then we'd no longer have to witness those awful vandalised shirts that umbro sell.

    And are still getting.

Only the other day I heard respected radio sports journalist Des Cahill refer to the LoI as the e****m league.

And some people on here still do so too.

And thats what it will be known until there is a replacement.....

And who is going to replace them?

So maybe it was a good move by Eircom ;)

I think it was a premature move. For example the LOI was featured in the FIFA 2009 game with eircom being shown in the game. That game has a lot of people playing it which would give eircom a lot of exposure. As well as that many people know the league as the "eircom" league so any time it was mentioned they were getting more exposure.

If the FAI had any cop on they would have told eircom to get lost.

Bit of hardball from the FAI was probably all that was needed.

And no doubt the big screen at Croker tomorrow will have a big eircom logo on it. And when there's an injury instead of showing the tackle, or goal, they'll play an Eircom ad. I really hate eircom.

Anyone got a funny adaptation to the international jersey which people could get done and give this crowd the kind of publicity they deserve?

Bit of will from the FAI to play hardball would be required in the first place. It beggars belief that they would allow this to happen, after all their hot air about fostering the league. And it makes any revised AIL proposal much more attractive.

I wonder will anyone bother to step in? With all the poor publicity this season, I cannot imagine any company wanting to come on board.

That being said, Lucozade Sport are going sponsoring all the dug outs in the league starting 2009

Why don't all LOI fans here pitch in and we can make the 2009 season the Boards.ie League!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,296 ✭✭✭✭gimmick

Nah, it would not suit those from non LOI counties :)
