I have a friend who has a stammer (no, it's not me) that goes away completely when they sing (in the bath and shower). It also goes away when they ration themselves to one lungful of air per sentence and breath after saying every punctuation mark (try reading something out).

Anyone tried either one of these?

It's known that a stutterer doesn't stutter when they sing but I'm sure some stutterers do. It's apparently the same when someone is acting. I can't sing or act so its no use to me :D
Bruce Willis is meant to have a stutter but it doesn't show when he acts, he might have had it only as a child though.

Bruce Willis had his as a child but 'grew' out of it. I've never heard of anyone stammering when they sing. Different parts of the brain are used for singing and speaking which probably explains this. Same goes for PWS (people who stutter) putting on accents, they rarely stammer or get stuck...certainly, thats been my experience.

To the OP...your friend might be interested in the McGuire Program...It uses a breathing technique like the one you described. Maybe he was on the course himself before?

Yes, I never have a speech problem when I sing or put on an accent.
I've even tried to 'put on' a slight accent when talking, but it's really hard to do and keep to. Especailly as its not natural, hard to use in used in every-day circumstances, and anyone who knows you, looks at you funny.....:D

Has anyone tried the MaGuire Programme?
What did they think of it ?
I'm thinking of giving it a go. I have read the good and bad points, and checked out the Patmar course too, but I haven't made up my mind yet...looking for some honest feedback first.

I have heard some good things about the Maguire programme. There are a few Speech and Language therapists around the place that specialise in stuttering and stammering.

I am currently a Speech and Language therapy student and me and a few friends attended the stammering awareness day in Limerick which was really good.

Here is the website for the Irish Stammering Association
    www.stammeringireland.ie

    Hope this is useful!

I only stutter when I know that someone's listening to me. I can't get a particular word out and then I get all embaressed :(

It's a pain to have to get a train ticket every week
