A friend was caught this evening for driving with no nct. He's got 8 points already. What's ahead for him?

There may be trouble. But, while there's moonlight and music and love and romance....

    Hard times!

If he's dumb enough to amass 8 points and continue to drive around in an untested car then I really don't see him winning any Nobel/Pulitzer prizes any time soon.

What's ahead I'd say is more points, loaded insurance premia and a career in shelf stacking.

He's not the owner of the car, he's just insured to drive it. Any get out that way? Is the onus on the owner to get it nct'd?

There is no penalty points for no NCT yet. Check the site again. It says over the table those highlighted in bold are active points offences

So they are going to make it as bad to drive with no NCT as it is to drive without insurance in the eyes of the law? Got to love this country.

Thanks TheNog, does that mean if he gets it nct'd within 10 days he's in the clear?

No he can still get a summons for court. Small fine for it. The biggest I have seen is €250

Points wise yes they will be the same but monetary fine for no insurance is way higher (€2,500 max I think) and of course there is disqualification from driving too.

On the day its up to the driver to ensure their vehicle is compliant.

No the ultimate responsibility always rests with the driver of the car. THe owner can be prosecuted for allowing a car on the road without NCT or Tax or if the driver has no insurance but the driver will always get the biggest hammering in court.
