To be involved in such a criticised budget etc - will it destroy the party, or at least in the short term?

I think it's unlikely for two reasons - they have a core support which will keep them in the game and they have good individual performers such as Eamon Ryan, Gormley, Boyle and Sargeant, some of whom are bound to keep their seats. Unlike the PDs, they can survive as a 1 or 2 TD party.

The other point is that the mauling they may receive at the next election may depend on the circumstances of the fall of the government. If they pull out in the right way (e.g. over a point of principle which is popular) if may give them some credibility in the period running up to an election.
