    Are they any good?
I know they're not very powerful, but aren't they reliable and economical!!
Anyone got any experiences with them?

As alot of lads will say they are an old, underpowered engine and people will advise against them. Is there any reason your going for one over the tdi?

The sdi diesel dates back to 1980 whe vw introduced the 1'5 45bhp diesel. Today the sdi dates from that 1.5 lump. It is a slug but will go for ever. Totally and utterly reliable, gives great mpg and is a great bargaining tool it has no turbo.

It's for an old campervan, so i need something reliable and economical.

    This is a 1.9 64hp (1998 - 2002)

They're no more economical than a TDi and there'll be very little between them in terms of reliability.

If I'm not mistaken, the SDI is direct injection (Pumpe Duese) with a fair amount of electronics. That would be very difficult to fit into your camper.

What you want is the previous engine, the 75 bhp 1.9td (code AAZ)

Lots of engine conversions here, including tdi, scooby and porsche ones

    Cheers lads,

But when you say there are a fair amount of electrics waht do you mean?

And how would it be very difficult to fit into a camper?

Just trying to get my head around it!!

    Thanks

assuming that you have an old camper, a T3 (or T25), it has zero electronic engine management, everything is purely mechanical.

Implanting an electronically governed engine would be a bit of a nightmare ...can be done, but you would want to know exactly what you're doing.

It's not a PD engine, it just has direct injection.

SDI officially stands for "Saugdiesel Injection", Saug(for those who don't know) means naturally aspirated.

It really means "snail-slow diesel injection":D!

Anyway because those diesels have so little power (try 68 bhp from 1.9 litres when some of the modern 2.0 diesels are hitting 204 bhp) they should be super reliable.

ahh ..so the electronics might be more manageable.

    Tells
another thing to keep in mind is that your gearbox may not be ideally matched to the new engine. Not because the SDI has such massive power, but a very limited rev band.

we have 2 in our house, turbo and sdi. the sister easily gets 65mpg regularly out of the sdi on a polo sallon, 160k miles on it.
