In Italy, iPhone is currently available on TIM and Vodafone Italy.

its also availabale to buy sim free from one of the many Smartphone shops, and 20 euro cheaper(16gb) as your not paying for a useless voda/tim sim card...

How is your iPhone going for you cojomo2. Any problems? What was the activation process like? Any recommendations looking back, about how you got it?

going grand, no probs and yep i had to activate it which took 5 mins..all functions work perfectly..

only recommendation i cant think of is not to buy it off a network and get stung an extra 20 quid..as as mentioned above can be got sim free 20 euro cheaper..i typically saw this after i bought mine from TIM..ahwell

Nobody knew it, not even my Italian friends, but ya know, big fizz. Love your split infinitive, though! :-)

Not that useless: your TIM SIM would have given you 1GB of data to use while you were there and access to wifi.

yeah i thought it might, but it would work..anytime i tried to make a call i got a load of italian pre recorded waffle on the other end..and surfing wouldnt work..

no big deal, i had my 3 sim and was using 3 like home...

The use by foreigners of their own language(s) is not waffle.

Well I note that you needlessly activated your iPhone, presumably with the 3 SIM but probably not with the TIM SIM? In which case, I would assume the small credit included would have worked.

Incidentally, I have never had any problem going to *any* sites whatsoever using my 3 Ireland SIM whether in the datamodem or in an iPhone.

The sim costs ?9. ?5 free credit on it, ?5 porting credit and ?10 free every 30 days when you top up by ?10 for eleven months.

did they release the unlock for the iphone 3G yet, is it due tomorrow?, any word if 02 are doing a sale on the pay as you go iphone.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,220 ✭✭✭cojomo2

yep you can buy a sim from three and put it in your unlocked iphone 3g..and you wont need to change any settings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51 ✭✭Sighface

the iphone 3g unlock is due to be released on the 31st of dec new years eve.

I have heard nothing about o2 doing a sale for the iphone 3g but if you want the iphone cheaper go up north the way the sterling is working out against the euro makes it a good bargain

i dont know if the dev teams unlock will work on a newly purchased iphone...something to do with it working only on phones with older software on them....not sure tho

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51 ✭✭Sighface

the dev team unlock will work with your iphone 3g if it is on baseband version 2.11.7 or lower ( any iphone 3g on version 2.1 should be on this baseband) they are working for an unlock of iphones on higher basebands so you just need to wait some more :(

Dont ever waist your time calling any of the networks for support if your using a phone which the network does not support. You will always get the same line "Sorry but we dont have settings for the phone as we dont support it".

Did you see the LG Viewty on Vodafone Thread, Their network supports the phone but they don't, bad an all as 3 support are at least they support the applications installed on the phone....:)

I was wondering if anyone could help...

I've a 3G iphone (jailbroken and unlocked) and on the 3 network. When I put my 3 sim into my iphone, it recongizes the sim and asks for my pin. When I enter my pin, I get "Sim Failure".

    Any ideas anyone??

When you say unlocked, do you mean factory unlocked as in bought in Italy? If not and you unlocked with yellowsn0w, turn off the pin (in another phone) and retry in your iPhone.

    I don't think yellowsn0w works with a PIN

Not sure, but do you have "enable 3G" turned on in general settings/network?

    Hi,

I have the same problem. I got a gift of an Iphone from a friend who hated it anyway, he was using it sim free for only a week when the hate set it.

I, of course was delighted to get it, and while I can use it with my meteor card, my 3 sim comes up with the same message, sim not recognized.

    Please help.

    Bell:D

    Hi,

If you are using an unlocked iphone with yellowsnow, you need to disable the pin number and activate the 3G and reboot your phone.

So, I have a question. I've unlocked iphone with 3 Pay sim. I can make call and receive call. But I'm not able to go to internet. However, I entered the following APN: 3ireland.ie without user name and password. Does someone can help me?

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 192 ✭✭bellapip

I hate sounding dumb, but I have no idea what yellow snow is, bar the obvious juvenile comments which keep jumping into my head:).

When I start the phone I get Cat, is this what you are talking about?

I have emailed my friend and asked him, but as he is merrily tracking his way across the amazon somewhere on a photo shoot, I am not that sure that my little iphone problem is at the top of his list of concerns.

    Thanks.

    Bell:D

    Hi bellapip,

Meteor doesn't provide Iphone, so to run an iphone on their network you need to unlock it. There are 2 way.
Either your iphone is already officialy unlock and you don't have do do it, either you have to unlock it by the dark way :D. There are guy that a did something special for that, named "yellowsn0w"...;). Look at the page at the beginning of the this forum and Internet, you will find more informations.

I have an Iphone 3G running on meteor and 3 without any troubles except Internet on 3.

For my problem, I able to go to Internet on 3 with an WM6 phone but not with the Iphone. Can someone explaine me what I have to do to go on Internet with my Iphone?

    Hi,

Notice a couple of questions around 3 network mobile and internet settings. You need to go to the screen settings->General->Network->Cellular Data Network

you must put '3ireland.ie' without the single quotes into the APN area, there is no user name or password, leave the user name and password blank, i.e. empty.

This will get you surfing the internet at 3G speeds if you are in a 3G coverage area you might have to reboot your iphone after you put the settings into the phone, with my iphone i didnt have to, it just work after i opened safari,if you are not in a 3G coverage area you will revert to the normal telephone without 3G coverage at which point without 3G I cannot surf the internet, but still make & receive telephone calls. Which i dont mind because that has been rare for me and I have been using the 3 network for 3 months without any problems. I have to say i am impressed with the service as for talking to them on the phone its hit and miss with them. Skype for the ipone will be out tomorrow 31/3/09 for the iphone ( http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/03/30/skype_for_iphone_to_hit_the_app_store_on_tuesday.html )
it was also posted on the WSJ so check the app store tomorrow, hopefully when you go to install it will be backward compatible to firmware 2.1 which i have not upgraded to 2.2 yet as i have a jailbroken ipone. Again Skype will not work on 3G, well the phone bit anyway, texting will. You need wifi to use skype talking.

The iphone just gets better and better, i am suprised vodafone dont realise a data package similiar to 3 network i.e. 10 euro for 1 gig per month..its great. For me having internet access is becomming the same importance if not more than making calls, why cant vodafone see this beats me.... they marketing department needs more focus on customer needs.

    cheers
    T.

Thanks CivilEx, I didnt know this... anyone know how there coverage compares to 3?...I have been on 3 for few months and I have no problems..plus 3 text is 3 cent..plus the ability to use skype over 3G is very handy.

Hey guys, just bought an iphone on ebay there yesterday, it cant be unlocked cuz it has 2.2.1 on it so i bought a turbo sim too, anyone tried a turbo sim?
Anyway one more question I have is about skype, I used to have an n95 and i dowloaded a skype app from three and you could make viop calls through the network for free, what i was wonder is, is there some setting which allows you to avail of 3s free skype on the iphone?
Im pretty sure the standard iphone skype wont work because i had the standard skype one for the n95 and it wouldnt let me make calls through the network! Sorry for the long winded post!

Hi people. Haven't the time to read through the whole thread just yet, so apologies if this has already been covered.

Bascially thinking of jumping on the iphone bandwagon. I think the '3 best of both + €9.99 Mobile surfing addon' will work best for me. So just wondering if the two get on well together? Its the internet side of it i'm most curious about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 775 ✭✭✭CivilEx

check out if 3 have 3g network coverage ( on their website) in the area that you are thinking of using it most. If you don't have 3g coverage 3 have an arrangement with Vodafone to use their GPRS masts, which gives you data coverage but it's very slow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,220 ✭✭✭cojomo2

Just a quick note regarding Skype on the iPhone...

this CAN be used for voice calls over 3g, not just wifi like many suggest...

you have to jailbreak your phone, go to cydia or installer(cant remember which) and download a free app called 'voipover3g' or 'mobilesubstrate'

Once this is done, the app tricks the phone into thinking its using wifi when in fact its using 3g..when enables voice calls on skype over 3g coverage.

Cheera, so its simply a matter of coverage then.

Now, what would be the cheapest way of going about getting myself a '3 best of both' sim card does anyone know?? Have emailed them about it, but they don't sell them separate it seems.

I have MMS working on 3UK, that was a doddle. Tethering remains a mystery for the time being. I have a 3Ireland SIM as well, if I hear anything, I'll let you know.

I am also interested in MMs and tethering info for a Italian iPhone on the 3 Ireland network.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 935 ✭✭✭Mixie

I'm thinking of picking up an Italian unlocked iPhone 3Gs and switching from O2 to 3. There seems to be a bit of back and forth on Boards when it comes to Three's 3pay with 1GB monthly addon.

Can anyone confirm that they are on 3 pay, with the 1GB monthly addon, and that data is used from that bundle (and not billed separately as mentioned previously in this thread)?

    Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,940 ✭✭✭dingding

I purchased a pay as you go iphone in italy from TIM at christmas during my holidays in Italy.

I have the phone on a 19 euro bill pay account with 3 with a 10 euro 1GB addon.

I use the data a lot on the phone and it comes from the data package.

I was never charged any more for data.

Also you can save on texts by getting the jellysms app and getting a voipbuster account and sending texts from this account. You can register your phone no with voip buster and the texts appear to come from your phone and replys go back to your phone.

    I can recommend this.

My account is not the best of both, rather it is an older tarrif that gives 100 minutes and 0 texts for 19 per month.

If you go down this route and need any settings give me a pm.

You can also check your useage in the same as any three phone by using a particular web page.

Also you can tether your iphone to your laptop using the file here

http://jellysms.com/blog and you can use your pc out of your allowance also.:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,940 ✭✭✭dingding

THe settings for tethering of 3 Ireleland and 3 UK phones can be found here.

    http://www.jellysms.com/blog

OPen this link with your iPhone

It will download a file and when it runs just agree to all the dialogue boxes.

Then go into settings network, and there will be a new option to turn on tethering.

Then just connect your iphone to your laptop and it will immediatly see it as a network device and put your laptop on the internet.

Still looking for the MMS settings

    Hi,

    I have a strange problem:

i have a 3g iphone running on a prepaid 3 sim card ( €10 per month data plan ) and works very well but some web pages come up with error. For example on the iphone when I try to access a torrent search engine like www.torrentz.com it comes up with web page is unavailable to view ( http://mobile.3ireland.ie/pc/Live/pcreator/live/mwsun ) . See attached/below image screen shot.

Heres the strange bit, i can access this web page from my home wifi but not over 3's network 3G newtork ( thinking its 3 blocking websites ) . So i went into the 3 store and explain to the guy the problem, i was thinking 3 were banning certain websites but 2 workers in the 3 store used their own phones ( one was sony erricson other was Nokia I think ) and both their phones could access the website no problem. Indicating to me that 3 do not block some websites. I am pretty sure these guys were using 3 prepaid sim cards also as opposed to 3 bill pay, but deffo 3 network. Strange!!!

    3662153691

    Anyone any thoughts?

i'd say it's because your pay as you go, i'm not sure can you age verify yourself any more, try a bill pay sim and see what happens....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,999 ✭✭✭Spipov

hey everyone. i seem to have an odd problem with the iphone 3.0, jailbroken and unlocked. i can pop in vodafone, o2 and meteor sims and they work perfectly, but the 3 network sims do not. always no service. they worked intermittently before but now just the no service bit.
tried going into carriers but it can find nothing. put in the 3ireland apn still nothing. resprung, rebooted, no joy with only the 3 sims. any particular reasons any why?

i got the list of carriers once, with 3 (3g) being said as restricted, i dismissed, it seemed to select it, but it still comes up as no service.

do i have to reset all settings and restore iphone then re-jailbreak/unlock and reinstall all my apps?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,096 ✭✭✭anoble66

did you unlock with Ultrasn0w? if so, it should work for all providers. If you have not done so already, ask 3 for a replacement SIM, pop into a store and test it in front of them, they are fairly sound. All are running Iphones on 3 network in Limerick :)

Try resetting your network settings etc and rebooting

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,999 ✭✭✭Spipov

tried all that. i did use ultrasn0w. it worked fine last week for some time. tried the rebooting and resetting. just not the whole full reset.

the sim card is working fine in my e71, so i dont think its the sim per se thats the problem. ill try a full reset and then rejailbreak/unlock tonight i guess, unless someone has any suggestions i could try?

its really funny that meteor and voda sims work fine but 3 isnt. i remember i had an htc trinity that did the same thing. never could get it to work on 3 network.
