Hey all, I am just looking for some advice. Ive made up my mind and I want to try for the cadetship. I am not too confident with interviews or any of the likes. I was in the reserves for about 5 to 6 years. Can't remember exactly. Anyone know who to talk to? Manpower I guess? How can I practice for an interview etc etc? What is the first step to take. I will be 26 next june, so if the PDF are taking anybody I would have to go for it very soon.

You haven't picked a very good time with the recruitment freeze. Don't know when its lasting to either.

Well I knew there was some cutbacks, but I didn't know that there was a total freeze on recruitment. :( not good...

    From military.ie
"Like all state organisations, the Defence Forces is required to cut its payroll expenditure in 2009. Consequently, recruitment will not take place at this time. The matter is being kept under constant review.
It is likely that priority for recruitment will be given initially to specialist areas such as Apprentice technicians, Cadets and Medical Officers."

Bear in mind the cadets wouldn't start until next October, which is close-ish to the proposed end of the recruitment freeze. Ring the Competitions Section in DFHQ for info on cadetships.
As for your time in the reserves, call your old units orderly room and get them to pull your AF 30, that'll tell you everything you need to know. I know some units hold practise interviews if some of their unit are applying, it might be an idea to ask them.

Cadetships Info (note that it says the next competition will be in February 2009 but that may not have been updated)

Isn't it in the constitution that there must be a Cadet Class in training every year?
Too hungover to look it up but I'm sure I heard that before somewhere.

OP you're first step to take would be a massive amount of research on the DF. Although you've had 5/6 years in the RDF don't think you know it all. Do your homework on Cadetships and Current Military Deployments Overseas. www.military.ie should get you some contact numbers for Manpower who should be able to send you in the right direction.
Extra Curicular activities are a huge bonus for a Cadetship. Hobbies dude you need hobbies. Physical hobbies. If you play GAA its a huge bonus, same with Rugby....not so much soccer but its better than nothing.
Rock climbing, orienteering, swimming...etc etc anything Physical thats Military orientated they'll lap it up.
Be physically fit. Know how many minutes you can run a 10k in don't try bluff them. Know how many sit-ups or push-ups you're capable of in a minute.

Start putting together a killer CV get all those awards you got in school all the job references you ever got, courses you might have done in the RDF put them altogether in CV format. Put pen to paper about all those times you were under stress and came out tops (the RDF tactical training should give you loads of fodder there)
Oh and leadership too research characteristics of Leadership and know it inside out...try and relate some example of your life to this.
As for the interview ask around try find out if anyone in your circle of friends (or Boards) knows a serving Junior Officer who'd be willing to talk to you about the process.
If you have a College degree make sure you know how this degree will benefit the DF. If you plan to go to USAC through the DF make sure you know what course you want to take and how it will benefit the DF.

If i think of anything else I'll post again. Hope some of this helps.

Sorry, but I don't think I posted anywhere that I "think I know it all" I know fcuk all. The reason I posted here in the first place.

I am implying that I have some knowledge and that time spent in the RDF may help me a little?

I know one that is a junior officer after doing the cadetship, I know another in training. I will try getting in contact with them, might pop down to the "hut" and ask some of the RDF officers if they could help out a small bit.

I will still apply regardless of the freeze. There might be some hope of getting in. Either way it's my last year. I think 2010 I will be too old.

After going to college and completing a 4 year course successfully, do you have any kind of priorities? Like will you get an extra year or two to apply?

Sorry mate don't want you to think I was trying to offend you. I know a lot of RDF personnel with 5/6 years service who have an obnoxious attitude. As long as you don't approach you're interview with that attitude you'll do fine.

I'm not saying you have an attitude I'm just trying to warn you (or other potential cadets) not to approach you're interview with an attitude like that. Any PDF member on the interview board will look for this in members of the RDF. Hope I cleared that up.

If you've already attended college then that should give you another year or 2's grace on your application...just like your time in the RDF.

Depending on your what your college course covers this might stand for you too i.e. if its Engineering, Communications or IT they are 3 subjects that Army brass have a hard on for. If it isn't any of the above then try relate your subject of choice to the DF.

Give this crowd a shout tomorrow and ask them to post you any information they can http://www.military.ie/dfhq/pubrel/infooff.htm
