I recently contacted McAfee about their McAfee Secure service which does remote checking of your website.

The sales guy told me that they have proprietary software to do this while some of their competitors use an open source app (but I don't remember the name).

Does anyone know the likely name of this open source app? (I don't think that it was Nmap).

    Not Nessus by any chance?

Don't think it entirely Open Source though.

Nagios is the name of the tool. It does basic IP connectivity tests but can also perform network services tests (like web, SMTP polling and plenty more).

is this for vulnerability scanning of a host, or for uptime monitoring?

Nessus & NMAP for the first option work well.
Nagios, Zenoss, BigSister etc all work very well for monitoring uptime, status etc,
