"IS IT SAFE TO GET A TATTOO WHILE BREASTFEEDING?"
"I have heard various opinions on the subject of getting tattooed while still breastfeeding. I have a 16-month-old daughter who still nurses on demand and want to get a tattoo on my forearm. Is there a possibility this could hurt my daughter? "

The ink used for tattoos will be safe, as it primarily stays in the skin and does not get into the circulation. HOWEVER, the needles used for the tattoo will pose a very small risk of transmitting hepatitis C. Recent research shows that a larger, multi-colored tattoo poses a higher risk than small black tattoos.

Most tattooists will not knowingly tattoo a pregnant or breastfeeding mother. It is suggested that mothers wait at least until the child's first birthday to give their bodies a chance to recover completely from childbirth before getting a tattoo.

It is not advisable to get a tattoo while pregnant or nursing. Although it is unlikely that getting a tattoo will hurt the fetus or nursing infant, there may be a problem with the quality of the tattoo. While pregnant the body is working overtime and cannot spare the resources needed to heal the tattoo properly and will possibly result in a light tattoo. Also, while nursing a woman's body produces antibodies that are to be passed to the infant.
