Think it differs around the country but watch out for the neighbour who rings the fire brigade and you end up paying for the call out.A guy near me who burns the straw always rings the local fire station before he lights up.Last bonfire night a local farmer used tyres, plastic etc to help along the bushes. The smoke drifted into a residential area resulting in the evacuation of five houses and two elderly people with smoke inhalation. The full Fire Brigade attended with chemical suits ,foam etc and he had the EPA for days doing a full report on the incident. Check with the council first.

Yea you can burn. Like last poster said, maybe check with the council, but its not illegal when it comes to bushes. It may however aggravate your neighbours if the smoke blows in their direction and if they complain to the council then the council may put a stop to it. ring your council anyway, we had a load of bushes to burn in the past year and this was what the council told us when i contacted them.

What is the position on burning briars, gorse and rushes ?

See EPA - burning of waste:

    http://www.epa.ie/whatwedo/advice/waste/burn/

See Mayo County Council - Illegal Activities: Backyard Burning:

    http://www.mayococo.ie/en/Services/Environment/ComplaintsandEnforcement/IllegalActivities/BackyardBurning/

See Clare County Council - Council Policy on Burning of Waste/Vegetation

    http://www.clarecoco.ie/Environment/Burning_of_Waste.html

Clare County Council's page includes a section on "Precautions to be taken when burning Gorse, Heather and Grass" But this would appear to be an in-situ burning with an agricultural benefit as against burning prunings/arisings which would be waste.

The council won't let you burn anything in Laois, but AFAIK it's ok to burn bushes in Kildare! As the others have said, best to check with the local authorities.
