    heater matrix issues ...... (Possibly)

    First check the obvious...

    (1) Check coolant level... make sure there is enough coolant in the car. If there is, come back and I'll go through the other options...

Could be the thermostat packed in and was removed to keep the coolant pumping.

OK, I should have said before you went off to check, that when you are checking the folant level, that the engine is running and the car is warm... DON'T OPEN THE RADIATOR OR COOLANT EXPANSION BOTTLE TO CHECK THIS!!!!

What I mean is that with the engine running and warm, the coolant level on the coolant expansaion bottle (seethrough plastic bottle that holds the coolant) should be at the correct level with the coolant circulating around in the engine and with the engine warm. Check this again anyway...

What you also need to do, (be careful here doing this), is with the engine running and warm, you need to very carefully check the temperature of the hoses at the top and bottom of the car radiator.

What you are checking here is whether the flexible hoses at the top and bottom of the radiator are hold or cold. You should be able to determine just by carefully touching them for a second, if they are stone cold or if there is hot coolant circulating through these two hoses.

If they are cold, this most likely means that your thermostat is stuck shut and is stopping/blocking the coolant circuit path around the engine block from interacting with the coolant circuit path outside the engine.

Also, what type of car is it, make, model, year & fuel type???

It's most likely the heater control valve that has failed. It's a common failure in that model Fiesta. Easily replaced from under the bonnet. As far as I remember it costs about 40 euro plus labour unless you can fit it yourself.

Isn't the heater not working a sign of the head gasket about to pack in?

Heater problems can be caused by a lack of coolant in the system, which can in turn be caused by a blown head gasket. All maybes, though.

Any time I've seen this lad going, the plastic pipe bursts and steam comes pi*ssing out all over the place... Seen it a few times on the Focus, a bit scary when it happens, is one of those problems that looks a lot worse than it is when it happens!

You said that the car has AC - did you make sure it is switched off (the light may be broken)

Yip have tried with A/C off and on . I was always under the assumption that you still could get heat with the a/c on ?

What way is the temp gage on the dash? Is it showing hot or cold when the car has been running for a few miles?

If it stays in the cool area and all the coolant levels are correct then the thermostat is stuck in open or has been removed.

You have A/C - is it mechanical A/C or climate control? If it's climate control then it could easily be an electronic fault. Best bet is to have checked by either a Ford dealer or an A/C specialist.

If the thermostat was stuck open the OP would eventually get heat when the engine heated up. The thermostat is either stuck shut or else the problem is probably the solenoid isn't working in the heater control switch as someone posted above...

I'm suprised no-one has mentioned that there could be air in the system. That's often the problem with BMWs anyways, i'd try bleeding the system before doing anything else.

+1, stopped working in mine and many others. Was €46 when I got mine 2 years ago. Easy enough to replace.

I don't think this happens on the Fiesta ones - they seem to just die without any warning. Mine just suddenly closed one day and wouldn't open again (i.e. it was stuck on cold).
