    Hi,

I'm running a classifieds ads website (www.divegear.ie) and want to have a mailing list system where people can subscribe/unsubscribe on the site easily. It'd be used to send a weekly update of items listed.

Does anyone know a free one that's good? And that can send HTML emails...

I've been looking at possible free php mailing list setups, but how safe are these? I obviously don't want any users getting spammed.

    Thanks,

    Joe

PhpList seems to be a popular choice. I used to use DadaMail years ago, but haven't for a couple of years

Thanks Blacknight, I'll check that out. I tried it before but can't remember what was wrong at the time!

Has anyone tried "Simple Mailing List"?

Do hosts not have an issue with sending out large amounts of email in one go?

    Check that with your host.

If you use something like Phplist you can control how many emails you are sending in each batch, so the mail server doesn't get flooded

PhpList, is the only one i've ever found that can allow you to throttle the servers load. Even though, was talking to a guy from a host i had in the states on the phone and when i asked him about mailing list, he laughed and said that they don't care. Emails are so lightweight anyway that unless there was over 100,000, it wouldn't even come to their attention.

He said that if a situation ever arose about server load, they have some way of slowing them down anyway, and even stopping them where necessary.

    Dadamail: http://dadamailproject.com/
    PHPList: (demo) http://www.phplist.com/demo
    PoMMo: http://pommo.org/Main_Page

    Personally, I'm recommending phplist though.

I'm using Constant Contact, it's not free but it is really nice and has some great reporting tools. It costs $15 per month and if you refer someone, or someone refers you, you both get $30. So technically I've only paid for 1 month and used it for nearly a year.
