    No run today ...
last night i started to get all tingly, like a cold or flu was setting in.
I normally would sleep through an earthquake but was tossing and turning most of the night freezing cold.
    I took some uni-flu,had a lemsip,plenty of vitamin c...
Usually when i feel like this its only 24hrs,rarely any longer.
so,i hope to get out for a run tomorrow at some stage, but we will have to wait and see.
Pity...my week is trown out now.
I wanted to go Mon,Tue,Rest Wed,double session on Thursday,Rest Fri and either 5m race on Sat or LSR.

its only a minor set back , you will be back running in a couple of days..fingers crossed .
thankfully its not an injury...i will probably give that 5 mile race a miss and go for a LSR on sat/sun let me know how you are fixed.
a mini break is no harm at all and will probably be good for you as you have been putting in a lot of miles lately

Agree with sungod. You need to be extra careful with the step-back weeks/days/time when you up the intensity as you have done. Better a couple of easy days now, than getting properly run down.

i was thinking the same,i wont get a long one in the following week with dungarvan on the sunday.
The wife came home with nurofen + or something like that...some stuff, starting to come around, thank god.
Was a bit worried earlier ...could barely put one foot in front of the other, all i was thinking about was the running.
The wife says its man-flu ....maybe she is right !

yeah,i have upped the mileage lately alright, but i would say its more so my 5 year coughing all over me the last week when he was sick.
If i feel ok tomorrow i might just do a slow 4m ....

    5m @ 7:33 Pace

    Back in action this morning.
Felt much better going to bed last night so i knew i'd be ok today.
I brought Wolfmother along with me for encouragement.
Got away with it weather wise as its milling out right now...:D

    6.1m @ 8:01 Pace

Decided to go for a 4 miler to see how i was, after 2 i wanted to be at home, after 3 i was nearly thumbing a lift home, then when i got to the turn off for 4m i decided to do 5,then i went for 6 and surprisingly the last two miles were more comfortable than the first 4 albeit much slower.

Happy to have got out though, will make a decision on the weekends running later tonight.

    9.5m @ 8:28 Pace

Did not want to go at all this morning, still feeling the effects.
I dont have much energy, appetite not great.
Glad to get it done and even more happy with the pace, would not have been able for anything faster.

30m for the week considering i was laid up for most of it is not a total waste of a week.

Any suggestions on how i should lead up to the dungarvan 10 next week, should i try do a normal week,or an other easy week...that would be two in a row though if i did that.

Bit of a catch 22. I'm in a similar boat, having not run with a cold since last Tuesday week, went for a 3 mile jog this Tuesday hoping to get back for Raheny, set me back, so rested again till Friday - was feeling fine, but sluggish on run and cold worse afterwards and this am. Had toyed with Dungarvan next week instead, but inclined to think now I'm going to wait till I'm absolutely perfect before running again and then aiming at Ballycotton 6 weeks away, enough time to get fully fit again (if I don't get in I'll find another race around then). Never missed this much time...

Anyway, if I was you...normally I'd have done tempo run today, shorter speed session than normal on the Tuesday before the weekend race (e.g. 4 x 1k instead of 6). But having missed a few sessions with time off, if feeling perfect I'd do 20mins at 10mile race pace on Monday or Tuesday. If I was feeling any way not 100% I wouldn't risk the session, I'd just jog easy all week and hope that I pull it out of the bag during the race. Good luck with it.

Edit - reason I'd do a tempo rather than an interval session is that I imagine lactate threshold would be more of a limiting factor than speed in a 10mile race, so having missed sessions and having to prioritise one, that's what I'd pick.

Cheers RF,hope your back on the road sooner rather than later.

I was planning on doing around 14 Monday.
Tuesday i was planning anything between 6 - 10 depending how monday went.
    Day of rest Wednesday.
Thursday i have the winter league,i could do that 5.2m at 10 mile race pace ( or would that be to close to the race ? )
    Friday - 5m recovery run ( over 8 min miles )
    Rest Sat
    Race Sunday

How does that sound ? To much maybe ?
My thinking is that i get the miles out of the way by tuesday, all i have then is 5.2 on Thursday and 5 Friday morning.

All this depends on feeling strong enough obviously, but i think i am turning the corner

Way too much IMHO. But it depends - do you want a peak performance in the 10mile, or are you training through it on the way to a marathon - if that's the case, I can see how you might want to do the 14. But if you want to race at your best Sunday, leave out the 14, do no more than 20 hard Tuesday or Wednesday at the lastest, and otherwise just short easy runs. 5 hard thursday way too much too late, I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,209 ✭✭✭Sosa

Way too much IMHO.do you want a peak performance in the 10mile

I want to run the fastest next Sunday that i am capable of.
I have no plans for a spring marathon, highly unlikely that i will at this stage.

thanks for the advice RF...i have no idea how to prepare for these things.
i'll knock the 14 on the head ...

    6.1m @ 6:47 Pace

I woke up this morning and for the first time in around 7 days i felt good.
So,with that i decided to hit the road.
After listeneing to Racing Flats advice,i did a tempo run :
    Mile 1 - 6:55
    Mile 2 - 6:41
    Mile 3 - 6:26
    Mile 4 - 6:26
    Mile 5 - 7:08
    Mile 6 - 7:07

I was trying to do mile 3,4,5 at 6:30 Pace, but i got tired just starting mile 5 so decided not to push it,but having said that mile 2 was not to far away.
So all in all very happy with my morning session,i just hope i dont feel the effects later.
I hope to do the same tomorrow morning, then handy short runs up to Sunday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,209 ✭✭✭Sosa

    6m @ 7:01 Pace

I set out to do the same as yesterday morning, but just felt to tired to do the 3x6:30 min miles in the middle
    So instead i decided to do 6 x 7 min miles,which i nearly achieved.

    1 - 00:07:04
    2 - 00:06:53
    3 - 00:06:47
    4 - 00:06:49
    5 - 00:07:29
    6 - 00:06:54

delighted to have 2 good sessions behind me,casual runs now leading up to Sunday...nothing faster than 7:30 Pace.

Got my chip and race number in the post earlier ....

Good running SOSA! Quick question, what happened on mile 5? Oh and why 2 tempo runs in 2 days? Just curious :)

Basically,i was knackered after mile 4,so took a breather, then got to the 5m marker at 35mins ,so i pushed on to get under 42 mins for the 6

Why 2 tempo runs in two days ? don't know really, part of me wanted to see if i could do the same tough session two days on the spin and last week was very non productive for me so i wanted to do 2 quality sessions early in the week to get them out of the way,now i'll take it easy leading up the Dungarvan 10.

    6m @ 7:48 Pace

Lovely handy run this morning with SUNGOD,a fresh crisp morning was perfect for running.
I was delighted with the pace, much needed after 2 tough sessions the previous days.
Winter League tomorrow night,i plan to take it handy around the 5.2m course, another handy one Friday morning and then rest up until Sunday.

Hopefully by then i will be bursting to get going

    Winter League : 5.2m @ 7:05 Pace

The objective tonight was to go at a nice steady in controlled pace, that was 7:05 Pace...very happy with that.
the urge to push on almost overcame me a few times but i just said to myself " you will need every ounce you have for Sunday " so i contained myself...very hard thing to do.happy i did though.

    Roll on Sunday !

    Dungarvan 10m Race - 64:37

Magic day for me...went up determined to beat my PB of 66:10,
but Sub 65 was going to be a push.
Decided to do as many 6:30 miles as i could and just kept it going really.
Absolutely over the moon to get sub 65.

Myself and Sungod met Abhainn and Showry afterwards which was nice.

My day has just been finished off with the 'Pool beating Chelsea and the boy from sunny spain notching 2 ...

    What a day !

Typical SUNGOD on the way home in the car,i was delighted and he was asking me what do i expect to take off that time up in ballycotton !
No let up from him !
I just said " Let me enjoy the day, ballycotton is weeks away."

    6m @ 8:16 Pace

This rates as one of the most enjoyable runs i have had recently.
After the exertions of yesterday it was great to go out and have zero pressure, not worried about anything.
Myself and Sungod more or less relayed the race mile for mile throughout the run.
Weather was beautiful,it was snowing at the start and then the sun came out and thawed it all out.
    Glorious.
Back for a scorching hot jacuzzi then ...fantastic.

No idea how my week is going to pan out yet.

J*sus, that race has taken the sting out of my tail !

Thought after yesterdays recovery run that i was fine,i was wrong !
I started developing a few aches and strains yesterday evening but woke up this morning to a beautiful blanket of snow and just had to go out again.
I really thought i was fine, but i was shattered ...planned on doing 6 but reduced to 5.
    Definitely not doing anything tomorrow.

If you run hard, a 10mile race will take a lot out of you. Don't worry about it, just ease your way back.

I have to agree with you Abhainn, tbh some of those celebrities should employ SUNGOD to whip them into shape, theres no let up from him,he's relentless...i'm turning my phone off for the rest of the week...not able for him at the moment.

    6m @ 7:33 Pace

Felt much better this morning, thank god !
I have the winter league tonight also so looking forward to that now.
I was not sure if i was going before i ran earlier...but i will be fine.

I have to say,im a bit surprised how much that race took out of me.
I really did not expect to be so tired for 3 days after it.
It was the hardest i have run,and looking back on it,i did way to much last week.
I was out Mon-Fri but kept the mileage low.
    Mon - 6m @ 6:40 Pace#
    Tues - 6m @ 6:50 Pace
    Wed - 6m @ 8:00 Pace
    Thurs - Winter League 5.2m @ 7:05 Pace
    Fri - 4m @ 8:00 Pace

    You live and learn.
I got into Ballycotton but will not be trying for a PB.
Im going up to enjoy the day out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,209 ✭✭✭Sosa

    Winter League
    5.2m @ 6:42 Pace ( 34:55 )

After this mornings 7:30 Pace 6 miler i did not really know what pace i would be going at tonight. The beauty of it being that you are not allowed wear a watch so you dont know until you take the last bend in the track how you did.
Im very happy with the pace tonight, next week is the final week,so i will be looking to break my current PB of 33:37.
I have loads of races coming up,it does not make sense to do them all,you would be wrecked,so i will have to pick and choose.

    6.1m

I noticed recently that my garmin was not beeping at the same mile markers that i would be passing,so i went down to the local park this morning to re-calibrate it,worthwhile as i did 5k and it told me i did 5.17k,so i adjusted accordingly.
So i was gaining 170 metres per 5k that i was not doing, not life threatening but i want to keep it as accurate as possible for my pace calculations.
I will probably do this once a month.

So that was 5k + 1.5m down and 1.5m back up.

Dont know the exact pace, but it was definitely over 8 min per mile

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,209 ✭✭✭Sosa

    16m @ 8:15 Pace

I felt very tired this morning, and was tired throughout the run.
I did a double session on thursday and went again yesterday morning to re-calibrate the watch, could have done without that really.
But,hey...its done now and im happy with the week....44.2m

With about 2.5m to go i pushed on a bit today as the legs were stiff and i wanted to loosen them out a bit.
    I did the last 2m @ 7:15 Pace and 7:05 Pace...

Going out toninght for the first time in a bout 10 weeks...cant wait.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,209 ✭✭✭Sosa

    14m @ 7:25 Pace

SUNGOD arrived up to my house with that look in his eye this morning.
I knew the pace would be upped.

This is my favourite route as its very scenic, but it is one of the toghest as there are plenty of hills.
I must drive out and take a few pics for Sloggers thread on the main forum.

Delighted with 7:25 Pace, feel great now, looking forward to rest of the week.

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/2057171

Myself and SUNGODS run from this morning if anyone cares to have a look.
Not as much detail as some of you with GPS,but it gives me what i want.

    6m @ 7:47 Pace

Very tired this morning, legs a bit sore from yesterdays 14 miler.
I think my body is telling me i need a bit of a break.
I have had 3 badly planned weeks.
I was sick for a full week, then i did alot of tempo runs for 5 straight days, hardly any taper before i pushed myself to the limit for the Dungarvan 10,then i did 44m last week when i should have rested a bit.
Add all that to yesterdays 14 and todays 6 ...i need a break.

So,i will not be running now until thursday night which is the last night of the winter league,i would like to beat my current best time of 33:37,we will see how i feel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,209 ✭✭✭Sosa

    5.2m in 32:22

New PB for the winter league tonight, pushed all the way as it was the last night, felt i badly needed a rest earlier in the week and after around 60 hours rest i was ready to go tonight.
First mile was tough,i just kept going after that.
Hard to believe my PB for a 5m race is 32:50 and i did 5.2 in 28 seconds less tonight...shows my improvement since i set that PB last august.

I missed the boat for connemara,woddle....SUNGOD kept telling me to sign up,but i thought i would not be ready by late march, and left it go...I regret that decision now.
We met Abhainn after the Dungarvan 10 and got talking,he was saying that i might be peaking for a marathon soon, but i dont have any options open to me...Connemara closed,Will not be going foreign,Wifes birthday same day as cork marathon......I would not fancy Newry as i believe the support is not great...
Belfast in early May could be an option.
Berlin is my preference ( have to try persuade the Wife ) ...If that fails ,I will certainly be doing Dublin...but that is not until October...long time to wait.

Basically, all i have to do is pick a marathon worldwide and my butty SUNGOD is almost certain to be already signed up to it,so i dont have to worry about companionship.

Good stuff, I reckon your well on sub 3 pace anyway. Berlin is fantastic and my wife a non runner loved the experience and really got into it, lots of shopping there aswell. ;)

Your as bad as SUNGOD,i will not be aiming for sub 3 whichever marathon i do,i was thinking more along Sub 3:15 ( like yourself )...I think i could manage 7:25 Pace after the right training programme.

I have been reading your log and you are doing very well also, your mileage has gone up big time, best of luck with the Sub 3:15 attempt,i'll be keeping tabs on you.
