Green computer server for the home or small office

The Bubba Two is a Swedish made Linux server (which comes as an appliance like a firewall router box). No fan – no noise. It only consumes about 10 W of electricity. Linux (Debian) pre-installed and up to 1 GB of hard disk capacity, with connectors for additional eSata and USB drives. One can install additional Linux applications on it like a normal PC/server.

The server is managed from a PC/Mac/Linux machine via a web browser interface. Use it as a web server, file server, print server, home media server, etc. You can connect to it securely from outside your home / small office using ssh over the internet, or an https browser connection. Install Drupal (www.drupal.org) and you can create your own customised Windows Sharepoint Services/internal corporate website, free!

If it ever broke down in a business environment, the Bubba is so inexpensive you could afford to have a spare unit to plug into your network in its place*. (€352 for a 500 GB model, €427 for a 1 TB model) incl VAT. None of the money is wasted on Windows or proprietary applications - everything is open source. This is the company’s second linux appliance and the entire production of the Bubba | Two is already sold out until at least January 2009.

At ESB electricity prices, the Bubba | Two server would consume about €16 in electricity per annum, switched on 24/24h for 365 days. A traditional low end server PC (250 W) would run up an almost €400 ESB bill per annum on the same usage basis. A far better choice than installing Linux on an old retired Windows box!

*Making sure you have everything backed up to a spare plug in hard disk
