Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Howya's.

There's an old bike Sitting down the shed at home, 1984 BMW K100RT for those who want to know. It's basically been left there for the last 6 years, after developing what I think was a starter motor problem. The tank wasn't drained, and it wasn't prepared for storage, the old thing was just left there. Last time it was even turned over was about two years ago. It's been left indoors for most of that time, and seems mechanically sound.

I'm looking at getting it running again.

    What do Ineed to do?
Engine, Gearbox and final drive oil will need to be changed, along with the filters.
    Battery will need replacing.
Brake master cylinders seem to be gone...though the brakes still work.
I'm pretty sure nothing has seized up. Still can be turned over by hand.
Coolant will need to be flushed.
It's fuel injected, so no carburretors to clean out.

Is there anything else I'm not thinking of?

tyres wouldnt be in the best shape either I'd hazard!

change all the fluids (including the petrol), charge/ replace battery and hopefully you're laughing

check the HT leads and any other rubber seals/cables as they can degrade other than that you seem to have most things covered. Make sure you check the computer under the battery as this may need to be reset with the injectors after sitting for so long. think it's something as simple as opening and closing the throttle without the engine running.

Thing is, there's a pair of them.

The injection controller's on top of the battery alright, but the ignition controller's sequestered nicely away under the fuel tank, along with most of the rest of the electronics. If anything has gone in there, it's fairing, tank..damn near everything off to get into it.

It sounds like the setup on a K75. You shouldn't need to go near the control unit etc as this rarely gives trouble.

I resurrected one of those (an RS) for someone, after many years idle.

All it needed was new fluids. Start there before you get carried away, and you'll a new/very good battery - they are hoors for low battery voltage causing all kinds of grief.

To check it's firing, new juice and battery is enough for a start. If it fires/runs, then go at the other stuff.

The tank is aluminium so no worries about rust !!

ECU's rarely give trouble - in fact it's usually the guy changing the battery not reseating the connector on the ECU that's most common !!

They're bullet proof, btw. Haven't made a bike as good, since.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
