    Hello

I've started using Ubuntu and in order to set up a wireless connection i've to find the windows driver and install that. It says its the file that ends in .inf, but i've found loads of these so i've no idea which one to use...
Can anyone shed some light on this?

    Thank you

I'm gonna move this one to the unix forum. You should get the answer you're looking for there.

I've used ndiswrapper myself before. I don't think it'll do any harm to try them all tbh. Where are you looking for the .inf file? It should be in the installer that comes from your manufacturers website.

ok well my initial problem was that i couldn't find the location of the driver, i found it now but when i load it in ubuntu its says its an invalid driver.
I'm sure its the exact driver i need.
Back in windows its telling me that theres software updates available for this driver, does this have anything to do with it saying its invalid in ubuntu?

I doubt that would make a difference.

Can you link to the page you got the driver from? Are there any instructions on that page?

Might be worth looking at this if you haven't already.

    .

    I'm fairly new to this sort of thing...the wireless card is built into the laptop, and i found the location of the driver by going into ;
    control panel>hardware>device manager
so i can't really link to any page...

thank you for that link though, i'll have a read through it

what make/model is the laptop? It's it's a Dell you won't need the windows driver - there's firmware update you'll need which is painless to install. (assuming the wireless card is a BCM one).

Type "tail /var/log/syslog" and paste the result here.

    It's a command in the terminal - Applications/Accesories/Terminal.

    Also type there:
    lshw -C network

This is to get information on your hardware and devices.

If you are still having problems with your wireless there's a couple of options .
The latest version of Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex its fixed a lot of the wireless issues.

    1) Theres the Ubuntu loco in Ireland. Its a user group. We operate a a drop in center . Its open most Saturdays we aren't too hungover :)
http://www.ubuntu-ie.org/node/12 . This might be the best place to go for help.

    2) Theres a lot of help on the web. Problem is of course you need to be able to connect to the web :)

Theres the ubuntu ireland mailing list https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-ie

Theres the ubuntu irc channels. http://www.ubuntu-ie.org/node/8

    3) If you are really stuck PM me and I can give you a call.

    Regards
    Sean

if you can just find the install file(.exe) for the windows driver you can install it and that should hopefully work.you can probably get the .exe from the internet once you know what model of wireless card you have.

you need to have WINE installed first before the .exe will run. Thats how i'm running my wireless card in 7.10 and its running perfectly.
