Anyone know what was being filmed and for what programme?

Passed the crew on Wednesday at about 11.30-12.00pm on the turn for Tallanstown from Mullaghcrew. They had a very old style blue Garda car and a staged accident with a car and a motorbike with the film crew so I am assuming it was for 70's/80's drama??

    Anyone heard anything about it?

If its the same crew, Gabriel Byrne and Colin Farrell are making a film.

They have spent the last three days in Mosney Co Meath, using parts of the camp as background scenery. My dad works up there. He was supposed to be off work but was called in to do a specialised role up there for them.

They are probably doing all the Irish scenes here in one go, sticking to a well organised schedual, before they head back to a studio in the States or Britian.

the filming was for a pogramme based on the dole office robbery in the late 80's. there was a garda sargent shot and killed there on the road where they were filming. it will be shown on rte in the future, not to sure when.

    Noels little bu,

Many thanks, do you have any more details of the actual robbery? Tried Googling it but no joy:(. Interesting to read up on the details.

    Kind regards

Not really too sure on a lot of the details. They robbed the dole office in Ardee and then there was a garda chase which went through tallanstown. It was on the turn of for the mullacrew road that the sargent was shot. I think he was from drogheda or navan. They were caught and i believe one died in prison and one is still serving time, but dont hold me to this. I'm not 100% sure on the date but it was in the late eighties or very early ninties. Hope that helps, i am sure if other people read this they might be able to help a lot more then me.

DID A BIT OF SEARCHING MYSELF AND FOUND THIS.

The following year, Sergeant Paddy Morrissey who was stationed in Collon at the time, was shot dead in Tallanstown following a dole office robbery in Ardee.

Chief Super Finnegan and two of his colleagues were the first on the scene in Tallanstown and were devastated to find their colleague lying in the driveway at Rathbrist House in Tallanstown.

‘We were in Collon that morning and when the word came in we went straight to Tallanstown. What we found was terrible and we took off through the fields, myself and Dessie McTiernan and Gerry Sheridan.

‘We eventually tracked them down, it was easy to do because it was summer and you could see their tracks in the corn fields. We also knew they were bleeding heavily because there was blood on the tracks.’

Although the situation could have proved fatal for any of those coming across the scene, as it had for Sgt Morrissey, it didn’t make an impact until days later.

‘We often thought about it afterwards, the adrenaline was flowing and the first thing we came across when we got to Tallanstown was Paddy Morrissey, whom I knew well, lying dead in the driveway and your first reaction is Jesus, we’ve got to get them.

‘You really never thought of your safety; you did afterwards, two or three days later you thought about the consequences but not at the time.’

The two men were subsequently arrested and charged and the money and guns were recovered.

‘In both cases, one of the abiding memories I have was when those involved were sentenced to death. It is the most sobering sight you could ever see.

The judges came out having convicted them, dressed in black with a black cape over their heads and it would put a shiver down your spine.’

The sentence in both cases was later commuted to life imprisonment to serve a minimum of 40 years in prison and the death penalty, imposed for killing a member of the gardai, was subsequently abolished.
