Word going around about some new Sony Eriksson phones having "super bluetooth", which enables the person owning the phone to hack into other ohones in the surrounding area and either wipe data from those phones or put other stuff on the phones.

And another thing - I have been told that this is can happen to you even if your phone is turned off? Surely bluetooth can only be activated if your phone is turned on and so as long as your phone is off, nobody can hack into it?

    Cheers in advance.

It's a java application, it can be put on more than Sony Erricsons, but they seem to be the easiest to use it on. It effectively acts like it's a computer wanting to use the phone as a modem, and they'll have to accept first. Many people just accept for no reason...without reading it. Many new phones have a firewall to stop it, but if an older one has accepted it it can be done as long as the bluetooth is on.

If you accept a random thing over technology that has a 10m range and you don't know where it's coming from you deserve it.

Without accepting it, nothing can happen your phone from this.

so what appears on your phone then when you're asked to accept things like this?

Usually it would ask you something like "Do you allow <bluetooth name> to connect using the MODEM service" or similar.

The same as you accept to receive a picture or tone that someone is giving you via bluetooth. Its often also refereed to as 'Candy'

Its an app you can also get online. It basically scans the surrounding area for phones and then asks them If you can use their phone as a modem. Once your in you can read their SMS, download contacts etc.

It is possible the coolestg java app ever !:P
I used it and if you own a sony ericsson and one of your mates connects to it then can do nearly anything, power off phone, master reset, automatic keylock, phone number, send tetxs, play music etc etc...It runs well on loads of phone but it "hacks" sony ericsson and nokia very well

It's also known as "Bluejacking" and the most common infection you can catch is called ComWarrior which has been around for a few years and is still spreading in new forms (Symantec have info on this).

One of it's incarnations used to send porno MMSs to all your contacts. That's quite embarassing if it's your parents!

When you refer to "Super Bluetooth" are you talking about A2DP (aka stereo bluetooth)? Almost all Sony Ericssons have this and the higher end Nokias etc. This allows you to broadcast from your phone to A2DP receivers so it can act like an Itrip for your Ipod.

Motorola do a new car kit for this that works with all A2DP handsets and allows you to use your car speakers for calls without expensive installations. The only problem is that you can't listen to radio stations as you have to tune the radio of the car into an empty frequecy.

also there is an assist app out there for candy which repeatedly sends the same request up to ten times a second so when you press no to accept the request the message does not leave the screen until you click yes, but what is infact happening is you have rejected the request but you recieve another one straight away, watch out for that one.

i think he just meant the ability to do all that stuff on people's phones. he thought that the person didn't have to accept it and it'd work if the phone was off

Sorry to go off topic but you mean if i have superbluetooth, an ipod and a car stereo i can listen to my ipod by using my phone, can you please explain, what application would you use?

Unfortunately that's not what I meant, I was bringing Ipod in as an example bu just to clarify.

An Itrip can be connected to your Ipod and allows you to play your music through your stereo system or car speakers by tuning to an empty radio station.

The motorola car kit uses the same technology but in a slightly different manner, you pair your phone up with the car kit as normal and the kit in turn broadcasts to your radio.

    Hope that helps
