    Hi all,

My friend has asked me to price a PC for his new home studio,

He will be running Cubase or Pro tools (probably pro tools) with many plugins like Halion / ezdrummer etc,,, He wants all this to run smooth with no Lag/Delay,

    What will he need,
thinking quad core,, loads fo ram, winXP 64.

    Any ideas?

Loads of ram/hdd space is a necessity for an audio pc.

Whether to go for a dual core or quad core really depends on which software you are using imo. AFAIK Pro Tools LE is a single thread program and in this case the clock speed of the processor, front side bus and amount of SL2 cache on the processor would be more important than the amount of cores available. Cubase 4 on the other hand can support 8 cores.

With regards to latency, this is decided mainly by the audio hardware. If he is going for a pro tolls setup (and by necessity, using pro tools hardware) there will be no issue with latency as long as the pc makes the miminum requirements of the software/hardware.

For Pro Tools your pretty much restricted to:

    or

    http://www.thomann.de/ie/digidesign_digi_003_rack_factory.htm

There are a few variations of the above at different price points. Also, there are some M-Audio devices which are Pro Tools compatible but unlike the above Pro Tools is not included with the hardware would have to be bought separately.

If you are not going the pro tools route then there's a wealth of sound cards available these days so it really comes down to what you need (interface, inputs, outputs etc). The Firepod (http://www.thomann.de/ie/presonus_firepod.htm) is awfully popular these days and is a great all round device on a budget.
