Park and Ride from Athenry to Galway this Christmas! by Corporate Communications

Christmas shoppers in Co Galway have a great value Park and Ride service this year at Athenry Station, jointly offered by Galway City Council and Iarnród Éireann.

Running from Wednesday 3rd December to Wednesday 24th December, a Special Day Return Fare of €6.00 per Adult / Student and €4.00 per Child (under 16 years) will apply for the period of the promotion, covering parking and train travel.

These Special Fares applies to all services seven days a week during this promotion.

In addition, the 12.10hrs Heuston to Galway Sunday service will additionally call at Athenry at 14.24hrs.

Its a good idea, but in the absense of dual tracking to Athenry and general lack of trains, you'll have a P&R service, operating what, every 2 hours and finishing ridiculously early?

i don't see your point. what has the lack of double tracking got to do with a seasonal offer? do you think people will go shopping in galway for 10 minutes and then hop back on the train? last train is 945pm not suitable for someone going on the lash in galway but would you want them using the park and ride if they were? train and parking for €6 sounds a great deal to me and you're avoiding galway traffic - priceless.

There's also a Park & Ride bus service from Ballybrit (Racecourse). I think it's 2 euro return with buses to and from Eyre Square every 15 mins.

It is a step in the right direction, however there are trains out of Galway at 1805 on weekdays and 2145 (excluding Saturdays) which are hardly ridiculously early.

Most people would have their shopping done by 6pm and want to get home.

On Sundays there are trains back at 1615 and 1815 which should be adequate.

Oranmore train station would be handy about now wouldn't it

Instead we have to keep Woodlawn and Attymon open.

Does the EUR6 fare include the EUR2 carparking fee????
Oh no wait, the poor people of the wesht need this vital service along with the ability to get the train from Athenry to Ennis.

The 2 EUR is per car! So if 5 passengers travel it's 20 cent each way!
