Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

If the Irish squad was a club squad in English football would they last in the premiership?

I don't think they could compete for a champions league spot but would they avoid relegation?

I would say mid-table maybe lower. Alot of our players play in the championship.

they'd be at their natural level, the championship.

sure isn't that where most of them play anyway.

there, or in a premier league team's reserve team.

Here's a list of all Irish players who have made at least one premiership appearance in season 2008-09
    G Given (Newcastle)

    D Obrien (Bolton)
    D Mcshane (Hull)
    D Dunne (Man City)
    D O'Shea (Man U)

    M Treacy (Blackburn)
    M Andrews (Blackburn)
    M Reid (Blackburn)
    M Obrien (Bolton)
    M Ireland (Man City)
    M Gibson (Man U)
    M Duff (Newcastle)
    M Whelan (Stoke)
    M Lawrence (Stoke)
    M Delap (Stoke)
    M Reid (Sunderland)
    M Miller (Sunderland)
    M Kilbane (Wigan)

    F Folan (Hull)
    F Keane (Liverpool)
    F Stokes (Sunderland)
    F Murphy (Sunderland)

Ironically the position where we have the most players featuring is in midfield but you can see the majority of them are in teams that are on a one way trip to the championship (8x at Blackburn, Stoke, Sunderland etc). Plus there's too many weaknesses in all positions (1 goalkeeper, 1 serious striker, barely enough players to make a recognisable back-4) to contemplate having the sort of squad that would survive in the Premiership. As such I'd envisage that panel (even if playing week in week out) getting relegated.

I reckon if we could Sign Stephen Ireland from Citeh we might avoid relegation...

my initial reaction was we'd be relegated, but on thinking about it, if we could keep our first 11 fit, we might push for a Uefa Cup spot.

Stephen Ireland would probably score 5 against us every time.

Given, Dunne, O'Shea, Finnan, Carsley, S.Reid, A.Reid, Duff, Keane, Doyle are all proven at least mid table level imo. In fact there's probably the biggest question mark over Duff's level out of those above players and he's well proven himself as one of our best players, still. McGeady, Garvan, Foley and S.Hunt could all well make a mid table team imo and there's a good chance a they all will be this time next year (well much of a muchness if McGeady stays or goes). Off the top of my head I'd say the best of the rest are bottom half premiership level to top championship level atm.

    Not including S.Ireland obviously.

Imo, our best eleven currently (assuming everyone wants / can play):

    Given
    Finnan
    O' Shea
    Dunne
    Kilbane
    Duff
    Carsley
    Ireland
    McGeady
    Doyle
    Keane

    Decent options:

Kiely, Delap, Hunt, Reid, Reid, Whelan, O' Brien, Murphy, Folan, Garvan,

Being entirely honest, that squad stays up. If it runs well with injury and suspensions - it is comfortably mid table.

If it was a case of an all-Ireland team we would definitely stay up as we would have Johnny Evans in central defence.(Single handedly got sunderland promoted and kept them up, now they can't defend without him)
Otherwise I'd say we'd be relegation battlers.

    Team to include J.Evans & S.Ireland

    GK: Given
    RB: O'Shea
    CB: Dunne
    CB: Evans
    LB: McCartney
    DM:S.Reid
    RM:McGeady
    CAM:S.Ireland
    LM: Duff
    CF:K.Doyle
    CF:R.Keane

    Squad Players
    Taylor,Brunt,Kilbane,McShane,Gibson,Fahey,McGinn,McCourt,2 Hunts, Folan etc.

    Actually might do well enough.

We'd get relegated. You have to remember the standard at club level is much higher nowadays than international (except maybe in the top 1%).

That said, with Trap in charge, we'd win the lot!! :pac:

Relegated. We don't score enough goals
