Depends what you are looking for. Is it a going to be a big one with mates, a work event or something more intimate with close friends and girlfriend?

As you know dude there is no shortage of fine eateries in around Carlton and its surrounding environs.

You are a funny bugger sometimes.

I reckon go somewhere that do tapas that also have a good selection of drinks.

You can either sit down properly or have it a bit more informal. There is a good Spanish restaurant on Sydney Road. In fact there's lots of good restaurants all along that end of Sydney Road.

The beauty of this is that you have some good watering holes to repair to after eating . If you want full on drinking Irish style you can hit Bridies (not as bad as the Prahran or City locations). Then there's the Cornish Arms (one of my fave bars in Melb) and the Retreat Hotel that stays open until 3am. You could even walk thru Princes Park in a foftified state. Happy daze ....
